Sound Not Working

Reply Thu 5 Oct, 2006 08:00 am
Is it possible that I've blown my sound card or something? I switched speakers, so now two sets of speakers don't work on this computer. It has to be the computer, right?

Anyone know of any thing I can do to test where the problem is? I have nothing...no sound...nada.

Thanks!

Did it ever work?

Make sure you are plugging your speakers into the proper output. The out jack is typically green unless you have some fancy sound board. There may also be more than one sound card - perhaps one on the motherboard and another slot based card. Try both.

Make sure sound isn't muted - look for the little speaker icon at lower right in your startup tray. Double click on it and make sure the "mute" button isn't checked, they try turning up the volume on the various outputs.

You can also check in "Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices". Look at the Hardware tab and make sure you see what you expect, then select it and "Properties" to make sure it is enabled.

One last thing, if you are using powered speakers, make sure they are plugged into a wall outlet.... Wink

Did it ever work? - Yes worked great until suddenly the music died.

I unplugged and replugged with both sets of speakers to make sure it wasn't loose....still, nothing. Where do I find the sound card and what do I do to it once I've found it?

Not even the "doot, doot, doooooo" when Windows started up.

Is the volume control on the speaker turned on/up?

If a laptop....is the sound turned up on the contol on the front/side or wherever your particular control is?

It's on a desktop and yes it's turned up.

It just died all of a sudden yesterday so naturally, I thought I'd blown the speakers. But when I switched out the speakers, still I had nothing.

Is it possible to try the speakers on somebody else's computer?

IT WORKS!!!
I switched out power cords.
Hm.

There was a green light but maybe it wasn't enough juice to power the speaker.

Anyway, it's fixed...thanks for the suggestions!!!

Good! You seem to have diagnosed and fixed the problem on your own. Cool

It's one of two things then.

Either the transformer died or it was producing the wrong DC voltage for the speakers in question.

Glad you got it fixed.
