I thought there was a significant reason.
Still sad, but understand completely.

Is the grand a month you mention for bandwidth costs or the cost of a new server itself? In Japan you can get an optical Internet connection with a Gbps speeds in your own home for something like $45 a month. My company is thinking of starting out hosting using VNC with remote access along with completely unlimited bandwidth for something like $1000 a year.

Actually the bandwidth is pretty cheap in comparison. What's expensive is the server processors and the RAM.
It looks like I'll need two dual processor servers (total of 4 processors) very soon. With at least 4 giga of ram.
I can get that for about $600 a month but that's totally unmanaged and the server management is very stressfull (3 reboots today because of server load).
Hopefully I can get the site to where it can afford a managed server but that will push it waay past a grand a month.
But the good news is that the new ads are working out well. Once A2K 3.0 (not 2.0) comes out and I start some heavy SEO I'll be able to make the site scale like that.
Right now none of the advertisers have ever paid me so I can only afford to upgrade a tiny bit, to a single server (dual processor) if it comes to it.
But I am doing a lot of work on the database abstraction layer and the template engine. Hopefully I'll be able to reduce the server load through those means.

monger,
But is your company gonna have redundant backbones, a generator and an air conditioned facility?
It's hard enough to keep a good level of uptime without dealing with flaky datacenters.
A good datacenter is very expensive.

Yeah they're thinking about going hardcore & doing it right, as according to what I understand Japan has the best bandwidth deals in the world & offering it with no limit would be too expensive from anywhere else. It's all still in the thinking-it-through stages though.

hmm, for me the bandwidth is no biggie. It's the servers. OUCH!
To get them with no support is bad enough but with managed it's horrendous. And there is little middle ground. I don't need a fully managed server but the unmanaged deals won't even give you help in an emergency.
Tricksical business this hosting crap.

Where is the chat-room? I've got Forums as my bookmark, and get a bit lost elsewhere...

Go to "home", then you'll find the chat-room on the left, last but second of those links there.

Hi, sorry I disappeared... the "dinnertime!" was what She Who Must Be Obeyed (pint-sized version) marched up to me and declared. So I went off and ate, then when I came back everyone had left, except for roger pogoing in and out (roger has arrived, roger has left, roger has arrived, roger has left...)
I had fun! Thanks all.

No, it was not fun, because roger never got all the way in. Just a big white room, with no list of occupants and no chance to enter a greeting anyway.

That happened to me, too, Rog.
Big, blank screen.
I shall try once in a while, though.
Used to LOVE chatting--though I run out of stuff to say quick, or devolve into porno talk.
When dys is there, we always wind up talking about duct tape.
Who knew?

Yes - I ambled over there, too. But, no go! At least, Roger, we were not there, together
