i had not heard of it and picked it up at the video store with a bunch of other dvds this weekend because the cover showed it starred an array of my favorite actors. kevin kline, joan allen, sigorney weaver.. i did not even turn the cover to see what it was about because i wanted a surprise..........but.........when it ended, i sat in stunned silence and tears over a work of art that tore a piece of my heart out of of me.
very, very few films have affected me this way, the deer hunter, saving private ryan, romeo and juliet, and only a few others left me so emotionally drained and confused.
if you have not seen it, do.
I saw it.. actually saw parts of it being filmed on the North Shore/Gold Coast. I am a South Shore/Irish Riviera girl....(its a local thing).
Regardless, it is an awesome movie!! There have been many movies made here (and yes, not in Canada) that haven't been released yet. Keep your eye sharp!
Thank God for video stores!
I have seen a film called "The Ice storm" - which was wonderful - but is it the same one?
Nina Ricci as well?
Set in the seventies?
Loved it - loved it. But I have not seen it since its cinematic release.
Good call. One of my favorite movies. Personally, I think the very last scene of the movie is one that every family needs to see.
In the tradition of "Ordinary People," this is a profoundly powerful film which rips open the guts of a family relationships. The HBO series "Six Feet Under" explores some of that same territory with the same feel for realism. The cinematography is poetic imagery with an atmosphere matching the drama.
yeah, BB i do too.
when i was 15 one of my best friends died in school of a heart attack before my eyes. as the film ended, the emotions it envoked had me recall the look on my dad's face when i returned home from school that day to tell dad about my friend billy dying. he just stood there at the door and said "oh jesus christ, no." and held me in his arms. billy had been a guest in my house countless times, and that night my dad and i just sat in the kitchen quietly talking for hours and the look on kline's face was the same as that my own father had as he looked at his son who was the same age as his dead friend. my dad and i grew closer that day than we had ever been before.
A family crisis can bind people together or it can push people apart.
yes, excellent, excellent movie.
I loved The Ice Storm. The attention to detail was phenomenal - the clothes, the home decor, the language of the kids. I give Ang Lee lots of credit for being a great director, but obviously he had a great staff working with him to achieve that level of authenticity about a time and a place unfamiliar to him.
kuvasv
I last saw the Ice Storm on video, a while ago.
A very moving experience.
A very sobering ending.
Much to think about ...
I agree with the opinions expressed so far on the merit of The Ice Storm. I have heard some objections from people because it is by no means light entertainment. Perhaps some of you are not aware it was directed by Ang Lee, who also directed Sense and Sensibility and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which are both excellent, as well as this summer's The Hulk, which I haven't seen yet.
What a versatile director Mr. Lee is.
He's like Soderberg that way. That guy could direct anything, I think.
