and then there's the all canadian double double

"welcome to tim horton's, what can i get you?"

"give me a medium double double and a glazed doughnut"

double double, two sugars, two creams, need lot's of energy to get through the tough canadian winters

In German that word -- though spelled differently -- just means literally 'spreadable cheese.'

Hadn't read all the posts yet when I posted that last. CJ is absolutely right: true Schmearkäse is actually much closer to cream cheese than to cottage cheese. But what do they know in Pennsylvania. And a good Braunschweiger is to liverwurst as Beck's is to Budweiser.

The latest in coffee that's mostly cream and sugar is the "four by four" -- an extra large coffee with 4 sugar and 4 cream -- yuck!

Yes, I've heard that here too at Timmy's. Gross.

I get my coffee black. At Timmy's, more often than not this is a confusing order for the coffee-chicks.
"Large Black, please."
"Just black? Like, no sugar or cream?"
"That's right. Just coffee in the cup."

I considered switching to cream n' sugar so I could feel cool and say "double double" too, but I like their coffee black way too much. Smile

"Schmierkäse" here in German speaking countries is any kind of 'spread cheese', most notably Velveeta ...

'Braunschweiger' on the other side is "Schmierwurst" (also called 'Teewurst' ("tea sausage" in other regions) - different to Leberwurst ('leaver sausage'): a kind of spreadable salami, just finer.
(Well known as judge Adam's favourite in Kleist's "Der zerbrochene Krug" ['The Cracked Pot'].)

Coffee:
especially in Austria you never get and order just coffee:

Einspanner (or "hitch")
Sweet black demitasse, a strong black coffee, served in a glass with whipped cream and sprinkled with chocolate powder.

Fiaker ("coachman")
Sweetened demitasse served in a glass

Kapuziner ("monk")
A small amount of coffee mixed with a large amount of milk.

Grosser Brauner ("big brown")
Large cup of coffee with a dash of milk

Kleiner Schwarzer ("small black")
Demitasse without milk

Kleiner Goldener ("small gold")
Demitasse with milk

Kleiner Brauner ("small brown")
Small cup of coffee with a dash of milk

Melange ("mix")
Half coffee and half milk with a frothy crown

Haha Walter, I remember the Austrian ordeal of ordering coffee. Starbucks
varieties are nothing compared to theirs. I always ordered "Einspaenner"
as this was the only term I could remember.

But "Braunschweiger" is differently here in the States than in Germany,
Walter. You can't get Teewurst here, only Liverwurst (that is in regular
stores). Sometimes I drive the 30 mile distance to a German butcher
who goes by the silly name of "Tip Top" but he has great sausages, and also Teewurst.

Why is that so hard? I drink my coffee black and I get the dumbest questions! Well, I do when I go to donut shops like DnD (dunkin donuts), but not so much when I go to coffee shops.

The same happens when I ask for egg and cheese bagel sammiches. Bacon egg and cheese? Nope, just egg and cheese. No sausage? Nope. No meat? Nope. I still sometimes end up with meat. I often wonder if that's because they decided I thought meat was too expensive, so they'd just slip some in for me to be nice.

Würtzburger has got to be one of the finest beers on the face of the earth (or anyplace else on earth, for that matter). It has a delightful bitterness I've found in no other brand.

Actually, it's part of the forth verse of an old student song (by Carl Maria von Weber, must look up in my books, if I find more):

Das Urbummellied - Carmen studiosi vagantis

Originally, that song is as of 1845.

(I know that there's an old [19th century] 'Commerzbook' in my father's library as well as some old editions of Weber. Might be, I can find them when I'm there later.)
