Jets intercept Russian bombers

Fighter jets from Norway and Britain have been scrambled to intercept Russian long-range bombers over the north Atlantic, military officials have said.

Eight Russian Tupolev-95s were detected in international air space over the Barents Sea on Thursday, Wing Commander Jon Inge Oegland, a spokesman for Norway's general staff in Stavanger, said.

"We sent up two F-16s [fighters jets] to mark out Norwegian air space. The Russian planes were close to Norwegian air space but they did not enter," he said.

Four British Tornado F3 aircraft were also sent to shadow the Russian aircraft.

Israel 'violates Syrian airspace'

Syrian air defences have opened fire on Israeli aircraft after they violated the country's airspace in a "flagrant and agressive act," a Syrian military spokesman has said.

The Israeli jets "dropped ammunition" over deserted areas of northern Syria early on Thursday, a spokesman told the official Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana).

Israeli radio, quoting unidentified military sources, said Israel did not carry out an air attack on Syria.

Hizbollah 'did not use civilians as cover'

By Mark Lavie in Jerusalem
Published: 07 September 2007

In its strongest condemnation of Israel since last summer's war, Human Rights Watch said yesterday that most Lebanese civilian casualties were caused by "indiscriminate Israeli air strikes".

The international human rights organisation said there was no basis to the Israeli claim that civilian casualties resulted from Hizbollah guerrillas using civilians for cover. Israel has said that it attacked civilian areas because Hizbollah set up rocket launchers in villages and towns.

Thirty years: difference in life expectancy between the world's rich and poor peoples
By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor
Published: 07 September 2007

Life expectancy in the richest countries of the world now exceeds the poorest by more than 30 years, figures show. The gap is widening across the world, with Western countries and the growing economies of Latin America and the Far East advancing more rapidly than Africa and the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Average life expectancy in Britain and similar countries of the OECD was 78.8 in 2000-05, an increase of more than seven years since 1970-75 and almost 30 years over the past century. In sub-Saharan Africa, life expectancy has increased by just four months since 1970, to 46.1 years.

Most people across the world think American troops should withdraw from Iraq within a year, according to a BBC poll published today.

The BBC World Service survey, released just before Congress receives a landmark report on George Bush's "surge", underlined the unpopularity of the president's Iraq policy.

In the poll, 39% of people in 22 countries said troops should leave now, and 28% backed a gradual withdrawal. Only 23% wanted them to stay until Iraq is 'safe'.

Sending "a message" to Iran?

Submitted by danielifearn on Sat, 2007-09-08

Well, well, well. Bombs over America. Bombs in our backyard. Bombs away! While MS-NBC was reporting five nuclear warheads were accidentally flown across the country last week, CNN was reporting it was six. Nobody seems to know for sure.

We're being told these weapons cannot detonate due to "safeguards."

Are those the same safeguards that lost them in the first place?

We're being told that even if there was an accident, the plutonium in the bombs wouldn't go far.

Baloney.

The HE (high explosives) could scatter the plutonium far and wide. How far? How wide?

One bomb that fell off a jet years ago over Mars Bluff, South Carolina created a hole 50 feet across and 35 feet deep when the conventional explosives detonated. Obviously, there was no nuclear explosion, but there was significant contamination.

Each nuclear bomb in last week's incident -- W-80 model cruise missiles of up to 150 kilotons each --contains about 10 pounds of highly radioactive material (Plutonium-239, possibly "supergrade" (very low in Plutonium-240)). Additionally, there is highly poisonous Hydrogen-3 ("tritium") which is injected into the center of the bomb moments before the explosion, and beryllium is used both to initiate the explosion (as a "neutron generator") and to reflect the neutrons released in the initial nanoseconds of the explosion back into the "pit." There is also Lithium-6, and Depleted Uranium (Uranium-238) encases the "pit." The Uranium-238 acts as a shield to protect the military personnel who handle the bomb. Then, at the moment of explosion, it too will fission.

So even without a nuclear explosion, there could be an enormous environmental problem.

And it's not like this has never happened before. Below is only a PARTIAL LIST of "Broken Arrows," "Bent Spears," "Dull Swords," and "Faded Giants" (endearing military terms for various levels of nuclear weapons accidents, all short of a "Nucflash." You can guess what that is -- it's the one they say can't happen (but then, why do they have a name for it?).

March 10, 1956: A B-47 bomber with two nuclear weapons was lost over the Mediterranean Sea. Despite an extensive search, nothing was ever recovered.

July 28th, 1957: Off Cape May, New Jersey: Three nuclear weapons without their fissile cores, and a "nuclear capsule" (the part that detonates) were lost at sea and never recovered. Other reports say only two of the nuclear weapons were jettisoned, and the other was brought back, along with the nuclear capsule. The damaged C-124 landed at an air base near Atlantic City.

February 5th, 1958, off Tybee Island, Georgia, a 7,000 pound, 4-megaton hydrogen bomb was jettisoned after a mid-air collision between a B-47 bomber and an F-86 fighter jet, and never recovered. It's still lost in the mud amongst old civil war ordinance. The Air Force insisted the bomb was not "nuclear-capable" (was missing the nuclear capsule) but this is probably untrue. At least two former Air Force personnel involved in the incident testified otherwise under oath.

November 4th, 1958, a B-47 crashed carrying a nuclear weapon.

In 1959 a B-52 crashed in Kentucky with two nuclear weapons on board. There were no explosions.

January 24th, 1961: Near Goldsboro, North Carolina a B-52 broke apart in mid-air. This incident was probably closest to being a "Nucflash" because apparently FIVE OF SIX SAFETY SYSTEMS FAILED!

On December 8th, 1964, a B-58 bomber skidded off the runway, and "portions" of five nuclear weapons burned.

In 1965 an aircraft rolled off an aircraft carrier with a "live hydrogen bomb" and sank. Fortunately, it didn't go off. This was near Okinawa. Years later it was still leaking radioactive material.

On January 17th, 1966 a B-52 collided with a KC-135 refueling tanker and crashed in Spain. Seven crew members of the KC-135 were burned to death. The clean-up cost millions of dollars. More than a thousand tons of dirt were brought back to America and dumped at the Savannah River Site, but nevertheless, the cleanup was only partially successful and people in Spain are still being sickened by the radioactive materials that remain.

January 22nd, 1968: Near Thule, Greenland, four hydrogen bombs were "scattered" over the ice (supposedly the contaminated ice was later shipped to America). This incident sparked massive protests since Greenland had banned such flights over their soil.

These accidents -- and many more -- and this latest incident prove that there is no safe place for nuclear weapons. No country, no ocean, no lake can withstand the devastation.

The last B-52 was manufactured in 1962, so the youngest the plane that was used in this latest incident could possibly be is 45 years old -- quite possibly older than the pilot and co-pilot together. Is this safe?

It's time to stop this foolishness before something really terrible happens! We're not getting ANY BETTER at handling nukes, and firing or demoting those involved, while proper, WON'T address the root cause one little bit, because the root cause is that humans make mistakes. ALL humans make mistakes, and they will continue to do so.

"Nuclear weapons are designed with great care to explode only when deliberately armed and fired. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility that, as a result of accidental circumstances, an explosion will take place inadvertently. Although all conceivable precautions are taken to prevent them, such accidents might occur in areas where weapons are assembled and stored, during the course of loading and transportation on the ground, or when actually in the delivery vehicle, e.g., an airplane or a missile." - Atomic Energy Commission/Department of Defense, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, 1962. (quote presented by Jaya Tiwari and Cleve J. Gray).

Had these bombs exploded, who do you think would have been blamed? Al Qaeda? Iran? North Korea? China?

UN Adopts Historic Statement on Native Rights
by Haider Rizvi

UNITED NATIONS - Despite strong objections from the United States and some of its allies, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution Thursday calling for the recognition of the world's 370 million indigenous peoples' right to self-determination and control over their lands and resources.
The adoption of the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples comes after 22 years of diplomatic negotiations at the United Nations involving its member states, international civil society groups, and representatives of the world's aboriginal communities.

An overwhelming majority of UN member countries endorsed the Declaration, with 143 voting in favor, 4 against, and 11 abstaining.

The United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand stood alone in voting against the resolution.

"It's a triumph for indigenous peoples around the world," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon after the General Assembly vote. "This marks a historic moment when member states and indigenous peoples have reconciled with their painful histories."

SEPTEMBER 15
Mass March in Washington DC!
Gather at 12 noon at the White House

Saturday, September 15
Mass March on Washington & Die-In Led by Iraq Veterans

* People will begin assembling at the White House in the late morning. A march will form with the front contingent of Iraq war veterans, family members of soldiers and marines and other veterans. When the march arrives at Congress, the Iraq War Veterans and family members will be the leadership of a mass die-in symbolizing the deaths of an estimated 4,000 U.S. servicemembers. A powerful representation of the death of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis will be the other central component of this dramatic confrontation with Congress at the time that they will be debating spending another $100 billion to sustain the criminal occupation of Iraq.
* The Die-In is a civil disobedience action that will involve at least 4,000 people who are able to risk arrest. Click here to sign up for the die-in.

* There will be a permitted rally taking place simultaneously with the Die-In. All those who cannot afford to risk arrest will be able to participate in the permitted rally that will take place on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building.

A PLEA FROM ADAM KOKESH "PROTESTING IS NOT ENOUGH!"
JOIN VFP IN WASHINGTON SEPTEMBER 15!

Dear Veterans For Peace,

As many of you are aware, the next big mobilization of anti-war protestors is going to be in Washington, DC on September 15th. However, you may not be aware of the significance of this particular demonstration. Tina Richards of Grassroots America and I have been working extensively with the ANSWER Coalition to make sure that this is not just another protest. We have made the theme, "Protesting is not enough. Come for the rally, stay for a week of direct action."

To kick off the week of action, after the rally we will march from the White House to the Capitol, and go straight into a mass civil-disobedience die-in around the Peace Monument. The die-in will be led by an Honor Guard of Iraq Veterans Against the War who will simulate a 21-Gun Salute before taps is played to initiate the die-in. We are asking as many members of VFP as possible to sign up to wear cammies and die-in around us to symbolize the American cost of this war. We will be encircled by bolts of red cloth to symbolize the Iraqi deaths and invite anyone else from the rally to participate in the die-in.

Sunday will be a day of teach-ins including a Truth In Recruiting Workshop led by IVAW. That evening, IVAW DC will be holding a benefit concert. Monday is National Truth In Recruiting Day, and there will be numerous activities planned and we will need your help with an action at the main recruiting office in DC. Tuesday is Congressional Challenge Day led by Tina Richards. Wednesday or Thursday will be Veterans Lobbying Day, and Friday is the Moratorium. Also, the 14th, the Friday before the rally, is the IVAW CD Release Party. All of these events are on the calendar at Sept15.org.

ANSWER has offered to provide free transportation to all IVAW members on the ANSWER busses, and has agreed to extend this offer to all members of VFP in need. On the ANSWER website is a contact list for busses and if there is one that you can get to, please email Betsy Reznicek at the VFP National Office at [email protected] to get on the list.

As a member of IVAW, it's an honor to have the support of VFP when we attempt something as momentous and significant as this. Personally, I am hoping that September 15th can be a turning point for the entire movement away from protesting and towards direct action. It's important that veterans are properly represented and leading the charge at this crucial time.

Thank you,

Adam Kokesh

100,000 show up in Washington to protest the war!

Hundreds held in US anti-war march

Nearly 200 protesters have been arrested during a march in Washington DC held to demand the return of troops from Iraq and the impeachment of George Bush, the US president.

Organisers said 100,000 people attended Saturday's protest, but police did not confirm the figure.

The arrests took place as police used chemical sprays on protesters attempting to climb over barricades outside the Capitol building.

Up to 1,000 counter-protesters gathered close by and chanted angrily at the anti-war protesters as they marched to the Capitol.

Demonstrators had gathered outside the White House before heading toward the US Capitol building.

The demonstrations come days after General David Petraeus, the senior US commander in Iraq, testified to the US congress on conditions in Iraq.

Viviana Hurtado, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Washington DC, said the anti-war demonstration was attended by people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

"One of the differences with this demonstration is that it is being led by Iraqi war veterans," she said.

Veterans protest

Phil Aliff, 21, marched as a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.
"I stayed [in Iraq] for a year, in Abu Ghraib and outside Fallujah," he said.

"When we arrived, we were told we were here to bring stabilisation to the country.

"But we were not rebuilding anything. The Iraqis had only two hours of electricity. And I saw the atrocities committed by the Americans there."

The arrests came after several dozen protesters carried out a "die-in", lying on their backs in front of congress in an attempt to draw attention to the rising death toll in Iraq.

Many were arrested without a struggle after they jumped over a waist-high barrier.

But some grew angry as police with shields and riot gear attempted to push them back and police used chemical spray on at least two people.

'Trust eroded'

Relatives of soldiers who are serving or had served in Iraq were a key group within the public demonstration.

Diane Santoriello held a photograph of her son Neil, who was killed in Iraq in August 2004.

I am here to get congress to de-fund the war," she said.

Brian Becker from the Answer (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) coalition, the group organising the anti-war march, said Iraqi civilians wanted US forces out of their country.

"The vast majority of the people in the US want the war ended and the troops brought home now," he said.

Speakers at the anti-war demonstration included Cindy Sheehan, an activist whose son was killed while serving in Iraq.

US public support for the war is at an all-time low, with 62 per cent of Americans believing that invading Iraq was a mistake, according to a New York Times/CBS poll published last week.

With a full week of activities before next weekends start - looks like the protest has got off to a good start

I used to think that the only morons in the world were the one's that raised me.
Ha!
Today I read a pro-war piece of propaganda in the Guardian UK - just about the most depressing thing I've read in my life so far.

BE SURE TO READ THE COMMENTS WRITTEN BELOW THE PIECE

Here's one that summed it up for me…

"Another Warmongering observer leader column.
How dare you campaign for more mass killing and chaos?.
How dare you push for countless more deaths for profit?. It is pure racism to put no value on Iranian peoples lives. You really do disgust me, on this beautiful morning."

To have to add the Guardian to my list of morons is heartbreaking and sobering. Oh well, what did I expect?
Intelligent humans are on the decline (they end up dead, vilified or driven insane)…

If you all want to fry little Iranian children so very f*cking much - just carry on watching it happen and do NOTHING

For 250 years Iran has been a non-invasive nation. I've seen with my own eyes the burnt faces of the chemical war unleashed on these people by Saddam (WOMD made in the USA)

Now - for their oil, Iran (who can not make a nuclear bomb for at least 10 years) are being demonised in the same way Iraq was.

Have the editors at the Guardian forgotten already - the lies that were told about Iraq? That they could nuke us in 45minutes (Blair)?

How sickening to witness the grotesque corruption of yet another British news paper

Greenspan Misses Cheney's Memo: Spills the Beans on Oil
by Ray McGovern

For those still wondering why President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney sent our young men and women into Iraq, the secret is now "largely" out.

No, not from the lips of former secretary of state Colin Powell. It appears we shall have to wait until the disgraced general/diplomat draws nearer to meeting his maker before he gets concerned over anything more than the "blot" that Iraq has put on his reputation.

Rather, the uncommon candor comes from a highly respected Republican doyen, economist Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006, whom the president has praised for his "wise policies and prudent judgment." Sadly for Bush and Cheney, Greenspan decided to put prudence aside in his new book, The Age of Turbulence, and answer the most neuralgic issue of our times - why the United States invaded Iraq.

Greenspan writes:

"I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil."

Everyone knows? Would that it were so. But it's hardly everyone. Sometimes I think it's hardly anyone.

There are so many, still, who "can't handle the truth," and that is all too understandable. I have found it a wrenching experience to be forced to conclude that the America I love would deliberately launch what the Nuremburg Tribunal called the "supreme international crime" - a war of aggression - largely for oil. For those who are able to overcome the very common, instinctive denial, for those who can handle the truth, it really helps to turn off the Sunday football games early enough to catch up on what's going on.

A protester holds up a sign before being escorted out by Capitol Hill Police during testimony from the US Commander in Iraq General David Petraeus before a joint hearing of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees on the state of the war on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
Hi Endy, you are the only one reporting on the protest in Washington and and your not even an American.Laughing

Their will be no press here for the protest and all the "Political intellectuals" will continue articulate their impotent speeches.

I didn't even really pay any attention and I used to volunteer for them.

150 arrested!!! Thats alot.

I miss being there. It is really the only time I feel alive instead of surrounded by these zombies.
