I think cooking too much food is genetic, to a degree. Altho' it's just me and my guy, I always cook with leftovers in mind. My mother cooked for an army, holidays were just a regular food fest and everyone took home a little sumthin' sumthin' to savor later on. I remember calling a cousin the day after a holiday and asked what was she doing. Her response was "tapping my foot and humming while sitting at the table eating a bowl of your mama's gumbo." Mama's seafood gumbo made us sing.

Artist/teachers that have had much influence on me were all pretty much alcoholics. I was always amazed (and caught up, with how a dissapate lifestyle could manifest itself in creative works)Two of my teachers as a kid were artists named Baziotes and Costigan , who, always needing money , were always teaching at the art academy in Pa during the early 1960s, This impressed me to no end, how drink was a consistant companion to many. All I remember about Picasso and Duchamp , were their reported capacities, and Duchamp and Picabia would often wind up in jail for D&D.

Took me 2 decades to realize that there was no real relationship between creativity and destructive behavior.

[The]... point [of this quote is]...about the dissipate lifestyle and its non correlation to creativity.

farmerman talks about Maine a fair bit, so i'll make that my guess. (truly a guess as there are two other candidates roaming around in my brain - dog-loving, artistic, teacher types)

It is certainly true that, throughout the world, many crimes are done against people based on the fact or perception (on the part of the criminal) that the victim is a member of some hated group. However that is not necessarily a sufficient reason for the law to treat such crimes differently from others involving the same criminal act.

The rights of human beings are a consequence of their humanity, not their membership in this or that group. Once we attempt to have the law specify protected groups, we begin to unravel a much more important principle of the individual worth of all people. Moreover the question of whether a crime motivated by rage or greed is any better or worse than one motivated by hate is far from clear. Society and government has an interest in limiting the reach of all such motives, but cannot eliminate any of them.

Education is certainly a key element of the answer to all such motivations. However I believe it is much more important for that education to emphasize the equal rights of all human beings as opposed to the special rights of favored and protected groups. We have far too much political correctitude and far too many limitations on free speach and expression as it is.

I have no clue who said it, but I think that we should get "correctitude" added to the dictionary! Very Happy

My favorite mystery writer now is Henning Mankell of Sweden...I noticed Walter Hinteler likes him also. The books are slowly being translated into English...the latest one, "Firewall" is excellent. Maj Sojwell and Per Wahloo of Sweden wrote 10 of the best mysteries before his death in 1975...Henning Mankell seems to be even better than them, if that is possible
