Desert, not dessert....did anyone know that some of the richest truffle mines in the world are in Botswana? Anyone know that the Americans were quicker to adopt the fork than the French? Got a question about food or food in history, or another interesting factoid? Here is the place to post.
cav, do you know a book by Reay Tannahill called Food in History? Great resource for a lot of stuff, though I wish it was updated (my version is from 1988).
But - you don't want to know where margarine came from.
Not only do I have it Jespah, it was required reading for my Gastronomy course at chef's school. I have acquired a fairly large selection of gastronomic books over the years...and you are right, as long as I know it was butter used in 'Last Tango in Paris', I don't care to know where margarine came from...yuck. Also seems I have the same edition as yours, I wonder if it has been updated since.
Holy cannolli, I didn't realize it was a text book. Cool.
She also wrote
Sex in History, thereby covering the 2 biggest urges of humanity.
Heh heh, I read that one too...
What do you think about the tourist-oriented "medieval" banquets?

I think they are a pile of crap, with no understanding of what medieval cuisine was all about, including the intricate spicing, nor the social importance of certain meals. Here is a really cool link:
