The man who discovered that schlock is popular with TV audiences, produced a lot of it and made tons of money.

Aaron Spelling made TV--lots of TV.
The guilty-pleasure producer, whose prime-time hits, including Charlie's Angels, Dynasty and Beverly Hills, 90210, were often dismissed by critics, but more often embraced by audiences, died Friday, five days after suffering a stroke. He was 83.

Boy, what a run HE had, huh?
We may not have watched his programs or admit to having watched his programs but...job well done, Mr. Spelling.

Yes I agree, many shows he created for example The Love Boat, Charlie's Angels, Beverly Hills 90120, and Charmed became parts of our pop culture, also per the wires I read he had pitched something very similar to the hit "Lost" not as a reality show (ie Survivor) but as a docu-drama type soap, they passed but where still interested in tweaking the concept, when they got the pitch from JJ Abrams, etc. Again, he's definitely inscribed himself in the hall of pop culture fame. Many shows today good or bad, wouldn't exist now without what he did before. All respect to Mr. Spelling,
and sympathy to his family during this difficult time.
