Diesel Audi Car Wins Le Mans for First Time, Beating Gasoline.

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- A diesel engine car won the Le Mans 24-hour race in France for the first time as advances in engine and fuel technology allowed German carmaker Audi to overcome rivals using gasoline engines.

The car, driven by Germans Frank Biela and Marco Werner, and Italy's Emanuele Pirro, completed a record 380 laps at speeds over 200 kilometers an hour (125 miles an hour). The second-place car was four laps adrift.

The R10 turbo diesel injection, 12-cylinder engine was developed by Audi AG, the luxury and sports car division of Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest carmaker, and ran on a fuel made by Royal Dutch Shell Plc that is cleaner and more efficient than regular diesel.
