I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Captain James T. Kirk yet. Brandon mentioned Spock, but I didn't see a Kirk anywhere.

And William Shatner is quite a character in his own right.

Ok, here's a runner-up in my list of great characters:

Kwai Chang Kane in Kung-Fu (not to mention the blind Master Po). Even Grasshopper (Radames Pera) was memorable (not many other kids mentioned in this thread).

What's this Paladin thing several people mentioned. I don't think I'm familiar with that (him/her or whatever it is).

One of my favorites, Eric Cartman, is based on him...

Other favorites:

Stewie (loosely based on Rex Harrison)
Cosmo Kramer
George Costanza

While not a favorite of mine (which are few since I watch few shows), I think the single most influential TV character in my lifetime (around the world more so than in the US) is MacGyver. In many countries I go it's even a part of speech e.g. to "pull a MacGyver".

Paladin was the central character of a western titled, Have Gun, Will Travel. Paladin recited Shakespeare, indulged the finest life in San Francisco, then went out to use his gun to help paying clients. He was tough, shrewd and resourceful. Plus, he blew away quite a few bad guys.

I think I saw Rev Jim (Taxi) mentioned--if only for the driving test episode he deserves a mention. But one that I didn't see mentioned is the mentor of Duct Tape

Randolph Mantooth.
He was the first Native American to star in a TV show, and his character was an interesting one.

For those of you that dont remember him, he played John Gage on the old show "Emergency".

I liked that show and wish it was still on reruns somewhere like the "TV LAND" network.

It's Bill Bixby. There was a series where he played a single father to
a 5 year old boy. That show was also aired in Germany and I loved it,
especially the theme song.

"The courtship of Eddie's father" was it called in the US. It aired here
in the late 60s and in Germany in the 70s.

Ah, here is the theme song....I love it
