SiteKreator.com keeps coming up as a good one. Free! Lots of cool features that would be useful for what we have in mind.

I looked around on their site and couldn't tell if you can get a domain name -- like, if it has to be "www.sitecreator.ourlittlesite.com," or if it can be "www.ourlittlesite.com." Boomer? Vivien?

OK so after a shaky start, I've been messing with SiteKreator and I really like it! Have made a lot of progress, though it isn't finished.

I came here to ask something closely related to the question right above this ^^^, though I'd forgotten that I'd asked. I've found that you can have your domain point to the SiteKreator site. Like, if people type in "www.ourlittlesite.com" they'll be taken to the SiteKreator site, if you set it up right.

My question though:

Where did you guys buy your domains? You do have to buy them, right? What price range should I be looking at?

Thanks!

Are you sure that SiteKreator won't register a domain for you? I would be surprised if they didn't. You should ask a support person (if you haven't already).

Godaddy (the company I use) charges $8.95/ year to register the domain name. I think this is standard (although I haven't checked).

I'm definitely not sure. I'll look around. What I've seen so far has been about pointing a domain to the site, and seems like that wouldn't be necessary if they can register the domains... I'm really not sure about that part though. I'm pretty sure that Boomer and Vivian both have their own domains on SiteKreator, so hoping to hear from them how they did it.

Meanwhile, I'm having fun. :-)

OK, found this, and it recommends GoDaddy. It'll make "www.ourlittlesite.com" be in the address bar at all times though, that's cool.

My brother in law registered my site for me through GoDaddy.

Their customer service guys are great! I've had to call them a couple of times about kind of stupid things and they have never treated me like an idiot.

I like that!

Yeah, looks like GoDaddy will be it.

I'm getting excited! I'm going all-out with bells and whistles -- forms with text areas, mailing lists, members-only areas with files (minutes etc.) a forum even. SO cool. I need more photos (I have a lot of clip art functioning as placeholders) but it's really getting there. Will suggest that we register with GoDaddy, which will also get us email that we can use (I have the impression that it'll be [email protected], though I have to double-check that), and then we'll be ready to go! For $9/ year! Not bad 'tall.

Thanks for your help so far, everyone!

if it isn't to late... check out

tigertech.net

It is a lot easier to set up and manage than godaddy and they have great customer service. Prices may be a tad bit higher than godaddy... but, IMO. it is worth it due to the easy and customer service support you get.

If you set up a hosting plan, the domain registration is included in the price.

It looks like I'm going with SiteKreator (free) for building and then GoDaddy for the domain. I'm happy enough with SiteKreator at this point (and have finally learned how to get the most out of it, a bit of an investment in time and energy if not money) that I think I'll stick with it... but thanks!

When do we get to see your site? I hope the Moderators will let you post a link since I think we all would love to see it!

Put your web site in your profile.
Put your web site in your profile. The www on this post is a friend's web site that I feel is very, very worth visiting. My web site name can be found by looking at my profile. You can use one or the other place. Just point us to "where it's at." Smile Smile Smile [/color]

I dunno... it's still not finished, for one, but I'm wary of posting it. I think there has been more lenience for this kind of thing, like boomer's site (more "thanks for your advice, here's the result" than "help my site go up in the rankings/ buy my service/product!") but I want to err on the side of caution.

Also, even if it's OK, I'm not sure if I want it posted anywhere just because it wouldn't take too many steps to figure out my real name et al and I'd rather not have that permanently out there.

At any rate, overall it's going really well and I'm having a ton of fun. I'm using pretty much every bell and whistle SiteKreator has to offer, and they have a lot! I just registered the domain name and got that all taken care of today (so if you type "www.mylittlesite.com" it takes you to the SiteKreator site I've been working on, and that's what's in the address box, tres cool), and the board is really excited about it so that's great. Instant leap in credibility, really good for outreach etc.

Best Host I have Found
I recently started my own website project, hopefully becoming my full-time source of income...Anyway, point being, I wanted to find a cheap hosting company (no income yet!!) that I could upgrade and stuff if I wanted to and was well established and easy to use.

I did a lot of research and finally I signed up with GoDaddy. They are really, the best and cheapest hosting that I found. You can upgrade easily, they also have one click installations of a lot of CMS programs like Drupal, Joomla and OSCommerce. If you've tried to install these yourself, you'd know that one click installation of these is AWESOME!! That's pretty much what sold me Smile

EDIT (Moderator): Redirect-and/or-Personal Referral Link Removed

Plus they have cheap domains and you get free points to buy more domains and more hosting if you want, just by purchasing even one thing. I liked it, I recommend it!! Smile
