My theater group, which is very small town and very amature and very voluntary but which also produces some award winning shows will open a new show fri 2nd june 2006.

We started "bump in" today.

Bump in is when we take over the theatre and build/nail down sets, install lights and generally make a hell of a mess.

The show is "The Gondoliers" a Gilbert and Sullivan classic

Bare bones http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/dadpad/gondoliers/bumpingondoliers001.jpg

These flats will backdrop half the show and need to be turned at interval for a scene change. No such thing as a fly tower

The biobox: sound and light are controlled from here.

The week before a show opens is one of my favorite times of theatre.

The week before the show opens (tech week) still gives me nightmares, and I haven't stage managed in 6 years.

Breakaleg, dadpad! Are you in the cast or working on the crew?

mumpad is production manager so I get to be production assistant. Shes "THE GO TO GIRL".

What that means is I know the show backward and forward. I Fill in any where required on the production side when people can't do a shift due to work or illness. Crew, lights assist, sound assist, finder of interesting stuff when required (I think this is refered to as scrounger), sweep the floor, front of house. sorter outer of thing problems (as opposed to people problems) etc etc.

I hve had on stage roles before but am sitting this one out.

The set looks pretty good now it is finished. I'll post another photo soon

Soul_collector who posts here sometimes has a lead role. Pretty good he is too.

nope, no elephants. You know the old maxim never work with chilred or animals.

Not quite true that one.

We always find roles for as many children as possible. There are flow on affects from putting kids in stage such as developing self confidence and appreciation of theater and The Arts in general.

The fact that each child has 10 family members (mum dad grand parents aunts uncles etc) who pay for tickets has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Sometime I will tell some stories about things that go wrong on stage.

I've done shows with a cat, a dog, a bird, a rabbit, and once worked on an opera with several horses. Horses make a damn big mess.

Given a choice between an unhousebroken horse and a Stage Mother, "Giddyup" is my battle cry.

Enjoy the glow--and prepare for a awful, vacant feeling when the house goes dark until the next production.

Dadpad--

So have I. You'll have my sympathy for your cold turkey, after-tear down let-down.
