Tahiti/ Caribbean/ Hawaii for honeymoon?

I haven't posted on here in a long time, but I remember that you all seem to give good advice. Smile My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon (not until late September of 2007, so we have plenty of time). We are thinking about Tahiti, or more likely, Moorea, but other ideas are the Caribbean Islands (hurricanes?) or Hawaii. Can you tell we want to go somewhere tropical?

Any suggestions from people who have been there? If we go to Moorea, I'm worried about wasting half our time getting there -- I'll only have about a week's vacation from work in total.

Any advice would be appreciated! Smile

I've been to the Carribean. It's breathtaking. White sand beaches, crystal clear water . . . and no trash on the beaches, unlike here. Just don't get suckered into any pitches about time shares if you go. And have fun with the taxis! They sure know how to drive.

Here's what I'd suggest. Go to Hawaii. Stop in San Francisco for a couple days on either end of your tip. Double up on two of the U.S.' best vacation destinations.

if you want carribean, can't go wrong with a place in Jamaica called Jake's. it's a small eco-resort, with absolutely the best food i've ever eaten at one place over an extended period. but don't think of driving there yourself, and don't forget insect repellant--citronella should work. i'm not putting in a URL, because it might violate the TOS, but google should work.

I haven't been to Jamaica in 20 some years, but we always found that the western tip of the island, around Negril, was a lot more laid back and friendly. We could walk around and mingle with the locals without being completely surrounded and harassed.

Jake's is in the south coast, i think, not far from Black River, if you know where that is. about 2 hrs from Montego Bay airport by car, and probably that far from the nearest big resort.

Might I suggest adding Costa Rica to your list of possible destinations? Unsurpassed beauty for half the price of even the less expensive islands in the Caribbean and way cheaper than Hawaii (though the same climate). Through most of the Caribbean; you'll want to stay in the tourist areas for safety's sake. In Costa Rica you can safely emerge yourself in Tico-land as it may be the last Country on earth where the average Joe actually likes US-Americans. Perhaps the most beautiful place on earth... with the best weather... but it's the people you'll fall in love with.

I'll second that. And if you want a very special hotel, google Villas Caletas or it's association Distinctive Small Hotels of Costa Rica. We had an incredible vacation there.

On the other hand, I've also been to the South Pacific -- specifically Fiji, Tahiti and the Cook Islands -- at different times. That is another world. It has all the beauty of the Caribbean, without any attitude, and tons of romance. Moorea is a 30-minute ferry ride from Tahiti, and would wow you.

I'd almost be inclined to say honeymoon in the South Pacific and save Costa Rica for a little later because there's so much to do in C.R. that the honeymoon might get in the way!

It all depends on your own personality and expectations.
