The ghostly creaks and squeaks are probably caused by the top surface of the tread rubbing against the bottom of the riser. A nail or two driven at an angle down through the tread and into the bottom of the riser should stop the movement and silence the creak.

Also, do you know how to get rid of the creaks in regular wooden flooring (no carpeting)?
Best would be to drill through the floor and into the joists. Drive in a close fitting dowel and sand it down. Match the wood and align the grain before beating it in.

Rope the stair off so people don't walk on it. Works all the time.
