In my Gallery #12, scroll down to Ancient Cave Art:

ANCIENT CAVE ART - This wonderful site is animated to take you through an entire cave.

Cave Drawings in France: This is a fantastic site, the best I've see, to view ancient cave art.

wow fantastic site BB. Last year I visited Lascaux (repro) and Rouffignac (original) and they were absolutely awesome.

The paintings are incredible - at Rouffignac they are 6 miles underground.

And here I thought animated art was a fairly recent invention.

Bumblebee, it is a little offputting to have to scroll down, can you give more direct links in the futures? as in http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/arcnat/chauvet/en/index.html

Ossobuco, sorry, I can't provide more direct links to the What Is Art? Galleries. It is not designed to permit it due to site limitations.

6 miles down? That seems incredible. How did prehistoric man get that deep with only torches?

Equus, good question.

Are there any geologists out there who knows if, in the time of prehistoric man, the caves would have been 6 miles below the earth's surface, or less?

yes they were 6 miles underground then. The rock is limestone

They used torches the same at the 18c lads who went down for a 'dare' and wrote their name in the the soot from the torches.

When the paintings at Rouffignac were done they would have had to lie on their backs to paint as they chose a part where the ceiling was low. It has now been dug out for easier access for visitors.

I looked up the Chauvet site that BB put on, hoping it was in the Dorgogne (I'll be there next week Very Happy ) but it is in the Ardeche so won't be ableto see it. Crying or Very sad
