One of the things I excel at in web development is search engine optimization (e.g. I had a Google page rank of 6 within a month).

To the developers here I would like to offer my help with SEO and their sites.

Another option, if interested, is to work together in various ways (e.g. link swapping) to improve PR.

Lemme know if any of you are interested. I just got home and am following the google dance on their new testing servers so I'm in a SEO mindset.

Cool Craven! I'm up for anything & everything with this. How on earth did you manage a 6 within 1 month? I see google gives you a lot of backwards links from the phpBB.com forums..does google recognize Able2Know's signature links too?

yup, thing is, I ahven't even started my SEO campaign yet

One of the first steps would be to make the signatures invisible to google so that they don't hurt the PR.

Don't worry, I'll find another way to boost ya.

It's MUCH easier to boost a non commercial site than a commercial one but it can be done. Frames hurt big time BTW.

side note:

phpbb.com did not do the spider workaround, so the only backward links we get from them are ones that were linked to elsewhere.

We also get links from phpbbhacks.com (I published a few mods to phpbb software there).

But the bulk of our pagerank is from dmoz and my old sites

Yup, I know about frames hurting, but thing is my boss wants 'em. I'm gonna redo that site quite a bit better soon though. I tried putting in <noframes> text though to compensate for it but it doesn't seem to help much. My site only has a rank of 3 but it's the #1 result on google for a some good phrases that include "tokyo" such as "tokyo imports," "tokyo moving," "tokyo household," "tokyo furniture" and maybe a few more. I think I just got lucky though, as I don't know that much about SEO. How does google tell the difference between a commercial & non-commercial site, btw?

google doesn't (though some claim that they sp[ider commerical sites more, they are full of it).

You got those results becausethe words are in the URL.

Title of the page an URL are very important. I changed phpbb's treatment of the page titles to capitalize off of this.

html is better than php as well. One day I use mod rewrite to spoof html on these forums.

the reason I said commercial stes are harder is because of directories.

If I get back to SEO I'll have about 60 pages in dmoz. They have a page rank of 10 and feed google directly.

A commercial site has a harder time getting into directories like yahoo (you have to pay about 300 bucks a year) and dmoz.

Try to get into dmoz, but plan your entry. Humans edit it so you want to get it right the first time or one editor can keep you out for as long as he/she edits that category.

Another thing you should do is check your refferal logs. That is where you should be getting ideas on drawing search engine traffic.

Since google doesn't have a tool to measure keyword popularity use the adwords forecast to see which are the most popular.

Try to go for 100s of 2 word combos. It's easier that trying a top ten in, say, "computers".

Have you applied for a listing on DMOZ yet, gadgetaddict? You're still not listed there.

Once google spiders your site as deep as you're hoping for, it still usually takes a fair bit of time to count up all the internet's links and assign new pangranks.

Laughing typo there. should be pagerank, not pangrank.

DMOZ is the largest human edited directory. It is the same directory used by google and hundreds of other sites. Google's pagerank algorithim is quite affected by DMOZ & Yahoo directory listings. (PS: It's also very strongly affected by a page's title and the text near the top of the page.)

Neo,

Soon I will be opening up a program to help other people and their page rank directly.

Vivien,

Google penalizes geocities sites. Most search engines penalize free site hosts.

Gadget,

You need inbound links. That's all there is to it. Be glad that Google in indexing at all with that pagerank. I have 5 sites that are on my backburner and have a 0 pagerank. They have been spidered a few times but are not indexed.

I suspect you will be indexed in a month. But pagerank is usually slow.

If you want to boost it GET IN DMOZ! That is a pagerank 10 site linking to you. Yahoo is another huge booster but I strongly doubt thay will accept your site. Try some international Yahoo's first.

I haven't even applied for Yaoo yet, I am waiting till this site becomes a major player before I target Yahoo.
