We are in the process of finishing our basement, and am torn between whether to dry wall the ceilings or use drop ceiling tiles. Our ceiling is low already, and I want to drywall; however, my husband really thinks drop ceilings are the way to go because of easy access to wiring, plumbing, etc. We've never had anything go wrong down there yet in the ceiling (9 years), and just how much of a hassle could it be to cut a hole and repair and replace drywall.

How much room would you save? It seems like it would only be a couple of inches.

Personally, I dislike both alternatives, but would probably side with hubby on this one. Just because you've never had a problem doesn't mean one won't occur. And trying to repair drywall over your head would be a major pain, imo.
