@okie,
Echelon was legal because it was outside the US.

The NSA under Bush put the surveillance in the US which was illegal under US law at the time.

@parados,
We need to know more about the circumstances, whether random, or whatever. I do not believe the power should be abused, and if it was, it needs to be prosecuted. Again, I think this is not new during the Bush era, in fact it has been done for a very long time, including by Clinton. I have not delved into this very far. I believe Bush did nothing personally to abuse the power that he was given. I have yet to see any evidence of his abuse in regard to the wiretaps. Wiretaps started a very long time ago, including JFK wiretapping Martin Luther King, so it is not an earth shaking new phenomena that threatens to end the Republic as we know it. I believe we have much larger problems than that, and one of them is the one I just posted, the National Security Force that Obama envisioned.

@okie,
Another sobering video:
What are those people thinking now? It seems like the election was an end in and of itself, but now we are left with the realities of his poorly understood and explained policies. But think of the emotional investments by all of the people in Obama, it is not going to be easy to dissolve overnight.

@parados,
911 happened, Parados, but wiretaps are not new. We had to step up surveillance, and that is simply a president doing a job that needed doing to protect the country. Read your own article and it is explained. This is nothing monumental, but possibly individual cases of certain analysts overstepping bounds, but the program was not designed to spy on innocent Americans I don't think. I have never understood why libs are so paranoid of this program, you seem to be lacking a sense of scale. This is nothing compared to a proposed national security force proposed by Obama, that is as big and powerful as the military.

Have a good evening, I will check in again another day.

Of course they are, the books will have to be balanced and we can't get there by spending cuts alone.

@hawkeye10,

Obama will go back on his promise and he will raise taxes on the middle class.

The only chance this country has to balance the budget is to adopt The
FairTax plan and cut spending by shrinking the size & scope of government.

@H2O MAN,
Which crystal ball are you using? The same one as okie? LOL

All you guys know what to do is try to instill fear; you never provide any solutions.

After our economy gets back to a stable economy, taxes are justified. What you guys crave for is tax cuts for the rich even during good times or bad that you believe creates jobs. Show us evidence that tax cuts for the wealthy creates jobs, then we'll have something to talk about.

Show us evidence that you have a pair.

How in the hell do you figure anything that PrezBO has done and has planned with stabilize our economy?

All indications point to hyper inflation, huge numbers of additional foreclosures and bankruptcies, plus growing numbers of unemployed.

@H2O MAN,
Because most indications about our economy are showing a slow-down in job and home loss, closing of factories, and some evidence that the service sector is beginning to hire workers.

There's still a net loss of jobs, but that's to be expected from this major recession. People who live in the "real world" knows that this recession will not be over any time soon, because it's a world recession, and not limited only to the US.

From the NYT:

Hints of Hope Even as Jobless Rate Jumps to 9.4%

The American economy shed 345,000 jobs in May, and the unemployment rate spiked to 9.4 percent, but the losses were far smaller than anticipated, amplifying hopes of recovery.

Makes one wish that PrezBO and the US congress lived in the "real world".
Obamanomics will have a more far reaching and devastating effect on the US than you can imagine.

Please describe this "devastating effect on the US" that you fear?

Details please; generalities have no credibility except in your own brain.

@okie,
Oh.. the irony is delightful in your post okie..

We shouldn't worry that what Bush did was clearly illegal but we should worry about what Obama hasn't done. Your use of the word "paranoid" was perhaps the best part of your statement.
