Gotta go with CJ on this one. I've rented plenty of cars in FL, IL and WI neither buying their insurance nor furnishing proof of my own. It would be idiotic to leave your a$$ hanging out in the wind; but that is your prerogative.

Oh, and Wisconsin is one of those states that do not require any insurance at all. Sucks too, because that means the rest of us get to pay for the retards via Uninsured Drivers Protection. Thanks deadbeats.

No mandatory insurance in Wisconsin, Bill? Wow. My mom lives there and I didn't know that. In Louisiana, they even have certain days they set up insurance checks and pull people over to check for insurance. They are pretty strict about it here. It's a good thing too.

Dial the number on the back of your card and ask.

Ditto. Youngman, call the credit card company and tell them what's going on and have them explain it to you.

There are various types of coverage:

For good drivers with clean driving record:
Basic coverage for collision $xxxxxx.xx (minimum required by law) $1,000 or so
Optional Recommended $2 million for medical add $50 or so
Comprehensive for anykind of damage, theft, etc. (newer cars) $500 or so

I'd be pissed. Talk about big brother. The law needs a reason to get in your face, not just random assumption of guilt.

I've never had to show proof of insurance when renting a car but I've never actually read the agreement near the points where you have to initial that you are declining their coverage. It might have some tidbits in there about guaranteeing that you have private insurance coverage.

cjhsa,

In Louisiana, that is called "Louisiana politics." It explains away anything. If you get caught driving the highways without insurance, they take your plates, put a sign on your car, handcuff you, put you in the police car and take you to jail. They leave your car where it sits.

I'd move if I were you.

Nagin and company took away everyone's guns after Katrina, when that was all they had to protect themselves and what little they had left.

ya, then what? if i don't have the money to pay the bail, are they gonna keep me there forever?

that is so ridiculous. if i am donald trump, i can buy the insurance company. some people can't even afford to buy their own health insurance, and the government is trying to force people to buy car insurance? how come the government doesn't arrest people who have no health insurance? this law is so obviously ridiculous.

Because if you don't have health insurance, it just hurts you. But if you don't have auto insurance, you hurt the people you hit.

Rental car company does NOT need proof of insurance. I used to work for Hertz, and people from out of the country would rent all the time. They would always get insurance, but it wasn't required.

Besides collision, there's liability. That's insurance to cover damage and injury you've caused to someone else, or their car/property.

youngman,

Well, then it's a good thing you don't live in Louisiana, isn't it? You have to follow the laws where you live, I assume?

If you don't get into an accident, you don't need insurance.
