surprise party w/ dessert & cocktails??

I am thinking about having a surprise party for my boyfriend. I was thinking we will go to dinner around 7ish, then when we returned, everyone would be at the house for the big surprise (I'd have someone organize everyone while I was gone). Because the party will be so late, and we will have just eaten dinner, I thought serving cocktails and desserts would be appropriate. What drinks and desserts should I serve? Is this too 'wintery' for early May??
THANKS! Very Happy

I'm a Nervous Nellie and Party Pooper. When I read:

I thought, "Scheduling nightmare."

Suppose the Birthday Boy wants to linger over dinner or do something silly or romantic or colorful after dinner?

Meanwhile, you are dragging him willy-nilly to a SURPRISE.

Unless you can clone yourself to be both a Best Beloved and a Hostess in two separate places, think again.

She can feign a burst ovarian cyst.

Seriously, she could right after dinner say...ooooo....something didn't agree with me...please get me home.....

Make sure the guests understand that you will just have eaten dinner, and that you expect them to have done the same.

Or she could say, "Baby, I can't wait to get my hands on you...let's go home."
