I try to visit Chicago occasionally. I just find this so strange - Meijer even has a sign and slot for them on their shelves, but they never have any. I've tried five different supermarkets and none of them carry any small dried red beans.
I went (with the ladies diane and osso and my friend roger) to brekkies last sunday morning at a "mexican" cafe, there was zero beans on the menu. I was outraged.
Mexican restaurants don't serve "brekkies." You should be ashamed.
ddad, kiss my go-to-hell.
Hey, there was a taqueria in my last place of residence that served breakfast. Much of it wasn't particularly Mexican, but it was good and cheap. Burritos and omelets, huevos rancheros, menudo on the weekends. You could always substitute rice and beans for the hash browns too. I miss that place.
Aw, sounding kind of homesick, cjhsa. Hope Michigan gets better for you.
Lots of great advice here, thanks. I'm definitely feeling better about just swapping pinto beans for kidneys in my regular recipe.
Isn't chili without beans just, like, really hot sloppy joes?
Paul Prudhomme did a great version of beanless Texas Red in his "Seasoned America" cookbook. The guy's a master of spice combinations.
The inside jacket of mine reads "Good eatin, good livin, good lovin - Paul Prudhomme".

So, your chili is sloppy joe with beans?
