I know that Bartlett pears ripen to a nice softness (but you have to be careful, of course, or they will go too far) but what about Comice pears? Are they supposed to get soft or are they meant to be crunchy?
In fact, what about various other kinds of pears? Are Bartletts the only ones which get soft for eating?
A ripe comice pear is really delicious, but I guess I don't think of it as soft. Pears seem to me to have not that long a time of just rightness...
This is a delicious idea, eh..
Far as I'm concerned Tomkitten a pear is right when you bite it and the juice runs down your chin
But he can't do that before buying it.
Pears should be slightly soft in the narrow neck, when they are ripe. If the whole thing is soft, it is ripe and then some. I also toss them in the air and catch them in an open hand. I'm looking for a nice, solid thunk, which is a little hard to describe.
There's is nothing in the world as glorious as a firm, but ripe pear!
Did I spell that correctly?
Yes, and yes. I've had some where you either needed a raincoat to eat them, or a bowl and spoon.
I've also had some green, pear shaped, little rocks, too.
