45 years ago, Gerald Holtom, British graphic designer, created the famous peace symbol for the "Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament". It was used first time at Easter 1958, on a march to a factory of atomic weapons at Aldermaston (GB). Holtom combined in a circle the letters N = Nuclear and D = Disarmament of the semaphore signals, N = arms or flags on 4 and 8 o'clock, D = on 6 and 12 o'clock.

Today it seems the Italian "PACE"-flag with its rainbow stripes becomes a new famous international peace symbol.
Not knowing the semiphore symbols, I never would have guessed this. Very interesting.
