Problem w/ Rainsoft Q2 System

I just picked up a Rainsoft Water Softener. I have it hooked up and went to start a manual regen cycle to make sure everything was working. What is the first part of the regen cycle? I thought it should put water into the brine tank for 5 minutes. Instead it sucks it out of the tank. The next step is it sits for about 2 hrs while it is filling the brine tank. Shouldn't this be the step where it is dissolving the salt without adding water.

You thought right.

Step #1: put water into the brine tank for 12 minutes.
Step #2: dissolve salt for 120 minutes.
Step #3: backwash
Step #4: brine draw
etc....

How old is the unit?

Oh, that's wrong - if they are designed that way, they shouldn't be - very inefficient, inadequate brine strenght, filling brine tank with harder water. It really should be:

1) Backwash
2) Draw from brine tank to wash saline through the resin bed
3) Slow rinse resin bed
4) Fast rinse resin bed
5) Fill brine tank and dissolve salt until the next regeneration cycle

It fills the brine tank with soft water ... both the RanSoft Q and mechanical softener valves do this.

Your point is valid, it just doesn't apply here.

The Q was a great control valve - ahead of it's time,
but it is now obsolete just like this Apple PC
