He was a composer, and is most often remembered as the man who scored a number of Hitchcock films. I think he was brilliant, and anyone who's seen "North by Northwest," "Vertigo," or "Psycho" will know what I'm talking about. Thoughts?

Few know his only movie Western score was "Garden of Evil" which I have on a Marco Polo CD. His score for "Journey to the Center of the Earth" has a magnificent passage for organ and orchestra when the explorers first gaze down into the abyss of the crater. His scoring, with Alfred Newman, of "The Egyptian" was actually broadcast on the old LA FM classical station KFAC upon the release of the film. It's the best element of the film.

"The Devil and Daniel Webster" is a brilliant Hermann score as well as "Citizen Kane" (I'ave met many people who don't even know he scored that film).

His complete filmography of scores:

He was one of the early composers who championed the Theremin which represented the birth of electronically generated music and used it to great effect in "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

He's slowly but steadily becoming "canonized." He appears on more symphony concert programs every year.

There are several CD's out with compilations of his scores including Esa Pekka Solonen and the LA Philharmonic who performed it live with rear projection behind the orchestra of the films.
