I am just about ready to consider going on a cruise for the first time.

I've read good things about theme cruises, such as jazz cruises.

Has anyone ever gone on a jazz, or other music-based, cruised?

Like it?
Hate it?
Not mind it?

Recommendations for any particular cruise line?

the only travel agency dealing with jazz cruises i'm familiar with is...JAZZDAGEN...out of california. we were lucky to be on a holland-america line ship were they also were aboard. holland america line usually has a big band on the trans-atlantic crossings in addition to their regular bands , but you'd need at least 15 days or so for the crossing.
the bands that jazzdagen brought along were certainly great - and we were free to come to their performances even though we had not booked with them. hbg

ps. don't forget the "mal-de-mare" pills - or you might wind up with a needle into your tender parts - as it happened to me !

Jazzdagen looks interesting - though a bit pricier than some of the others.
They've got one in the early fall, based in New York City, which is always a plus!

I definitely need to do some more research on this.

in past years jazzdagen has usually had a five-day missippippi river-cruise over the new year. they are usually piced quite moderately - didn't see one for the end of 2006 .
you could always look at the missippippi river cruise line . hbg

It'll be a while yet, Montana. Gotta work my way up to this.

From the jazz cruise, I moved on to the idea of a jazz tour of Cuba.

Then I discovered a Cuban jazz bar had just opened at the end of my street.

Back to the cruise thinking.

Hey ehBeth. remember my cruise from last year? You pulled Mr. Hamburger into my thread. He and everyone else was so informative.

My Cruise Thread

I've heard of Jazz cruises. One of our radio stations here has one every December and it sounds nice but of course, this cruise is more expensive than usual because the artists' (sometimes 5 or more, depending on the legnth of the cruise I'd suppose) have to get paid.

A jazz tour of Cuba sounds exciting! Have you seen the Buena Vista Social Club documentary? It's a few years old now and several musicians featured are probably retired or dead (one died just recently, Abrahim don't-know-his-last-name. It was on the news) but the music lives on!

This ... Havana Feelings ... click is the new place at the end of the street. I went just over a week ago - good music, art and debate and decent food.

eoe ; jazz cruises aren't always more expensive than regular cruises because the organizer will usually book quite a few cabins . so the cruiselines usually have quite substantial discounts. check out "jazzdagen" and you'll see that they have some good offers.
jazzdagen will often book at off-season time, e.g. repositioning cruises that the cruiselines are anxious to fill. hbg
