Most effective method?
Geez, if someone else had asked, I'd have sent them to you, gus. You might google Lee Valley tools. I think they have a few debarking tools, though most of that line is more or less dedicated to rustic furniture and log construction. Anyway, Lee and their Veritas brand have a good reputation.
Thanks for your response, Roger. (I choose at this time to ignore shewolf).
I asked that question because my method, which is the drawknife and rotary tool, while effective, seems to be too time-consuming for my tastes.
I haven't read the latest "Diamond Willow Bark Removal Monthly", and therefore may have missed some revolutionary new method of removing the tenacious bark.
I just thought someone may have a more time-friendly method, but the lack of responses indicates this forum is severely lacking in bark removal aficionados.
And that is a shame.
Hie over to taunton and ask some of the rustic woodworking types there.
edgarB <not edgarblythe> back at Abuzz turned a few of us on to the taunton discussion forums for this sorta question.
I like to get my stuff debarked, and with at least one square corner. Feeds through the thickness planer with fewer surprises. Admitedly, my stuff is more formal and less rustic. Someday, I'll have to get a camera.
Now, if anyone has some real good sources of hickory/pecan, I would be interested. Rockler hasn't listed the stuff in a year, and Rockler can be quite pricey anyway. Willardbrothers hardwood has good prices on maple, but hickory just isn't their thing.
Take a look at these Gus:

You didn't say why you wanted the bark, but I assume you want it intact. Basket makers have used such bark strips for their craft and the above knives would have been used to do the job.

I think he wants the stick, not the bark, Green Witch. Intact, and without nicks.

Ive made rustic stools and chairs from hard maple, never used ANY KIND OF willow. What is diamond willow like to work with?
