@mismi,
Was fun til the host's 3 dogs got into a giant fight over a scrap of food.
I collected my stuff and went home.
I hate households run by dogs.

@panzade,
I certainly wouldn't have had them in the house during a party I think. Were they big dogs?

@ossobuco,
Aussies call a normal white coffee a flat white.

My sis asked for one when she was visiting England a few years back..

Chaos ensued.

A flat white please.

A flat white what?

Coffee

You want a coffee?

A flat white please.....

It's quite a well known term for a coffee here now. I think she was a trendsetter.

@ehBeth,
No, it's just a cup or mug of ordinary filter coffee with a small glug of milk stirred in.

Flat means non frothy.

@Lordyaswas,
hunh

it's a whole different coffee world out there

then again we've got Tim Hortons where it's single/single single/double double/triple triple and variants thereof ... and you better know how and what to order before you get to the ordering station

If you made a wine/ice cream float, brag about it here. Wink

@ehBeth,
Caffe latte doppio. This will be without foam, in a usual glass of their choosing, espresso + steamed milk.
In Albuquerque, I need to be exceedingly clear to get this to my liking, says Ms. Picky. I gave up on the glass business long ago. There's one place, across town, that does it well. People here seem foam crazed.

@Lordyaswas,
No - it's not filter coffee you heathen - it's a shot of espresso with a mixture of hot water and hot milk - so a more watery latte.

Stupid thing is I never order a flat white. The lady gave it to me buy mistake. I used to be a regular vanilla latte drinker but gave up coffee last christmas, and now, maybe once a week, get a chai latte.

It was actually nice without the vanilla, but she gave it to me for free when she realised her mistake. (It's so weird - I never ask for anything because I always get the same thing and the staff at the student run cafe know me - so they just hand me my regular - exam period has fried everyones' brains).

@hingehead,
But Lord is right about the non frothy. A flat white is sort of like a cappuccino without froth or brown powder.

@hingehead,
Speaking of which - what other parts of australian coffee lingo are unique? I assumed all these were universal:
latte
capuccino
flat white
long black
short black
machiatto

Am I living parochial fishbowl?

You know we don't see the appeal of starbucks, right?
