The news of KP's demise had little effect on me, other than it necessitated my picking up the remote trying to find something else on tv. I had no respect or liking for the man, but I must say one item from his childhood really knocked me for six.

As a primary school child he was sent to boarding school.
The school was in sight of his home.
What a close, loving family.
What bastards his parents must have been!

Yep...and he carried on the family tradition in many ways...being a bully as well as a benefactor.

I heard the poor little smegger was five when sent away, and that his mum lampooned him as stupid and useless after polio affected his school results.

he also had dyslexia, and never read well.

Kerry Packer was never one of the people

The late Kerry Packer may have had a very nice side. I've no idea. But let's cut through the welter of sycophancy that has engulfed Australia's media this past week and get one thing straight -- he was never one of the people.

The notion that Packer had the "common touch" appears to rely on two precepts: that, perhaps because of his childhood dyslexia, he was not a big reader and therefore had little time for pointy headed "intellectuals"; and that he ran a very successful television network based on the populist essentials of sport, lifestyle and shock-horror "current affairs" programs. .. <cont., with readers' comments following>

Exactly, dadpad. That seemed to be JH's original plan. Rolling Eyes
However, he's already been buried, apparently. So we're going to have some sort of tax payer funded memorial ceremony.

And seeing how KP was never much of a taxpayer.... http://www.wsws.org/news/1998/oct1998/tax-o15.shtml

I'm with the 'Ding Dong, the witch is dead' crowd.

Remember him blowing $34 million in a casino?

But with a gladbag in my mouth.

can you imagine the size of the newspapers over the past week or so if KP hadn't dropped off the twig. It was all there was in the Herald, and I'd guess the other newspapers were just as bad!

Sheesh!

Sell your ACP shares now! One.Tel is on Jamie's CV.

Yeah, the SMH was weird, but Fairfax has always had that moth/flame thing going with the Goanna.
