I don't get Portishead...will someone help me out here?
Juat as an aside, imagine the album produced by a Gary Debussy....
Portishead sort of spearheaded the (help me if I'm wrong with the terminology) the acid jazz, or maybe trip hop scene. Breathy vocals, nonsensical lyrics, vaguely jazz-oriented samples, boring as all hell.
Nope. Prince's new album is funky as hell though, and I'm not even a fan.
amazing guy, told his record company to scram-done it all hisself
I've got some. I'm not good at narrowing the list.
Danzig II by Danzig
Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Sailing the Seas of Cheese/Frizzle Fry/Brown Album by Primus
Spectrum by Billy Cobham
Bitches Brew by Miles Davis
SOAD by SOAD
Collection I by Misfits
And the best of albums for:
CCR, Mose Alison, Jimi Hendrix, King's X, and whomever I forgot.
Oh, and Death to the Pixies by the Pixies.
Dauer
Ohhhh Dauerrrrr!. Give me an example of the best of Mose Alison. I had an ex a long time ago whose parents were great friends of his and he'd stay at their house every time he played DC. He was such a cooool dude!. To this 18 year-old anyway.
Yeah, Mose Alison's the man. His delivery is incredible and his lyrics fall short without him. They're still awesome. This is Your Mind Is on Vacation.
You're sittin there yackin right
in my face
I guess I'm gonna have to put you
in your place
You know if silence was golden
you couldn't raise a dime
because your mind is on vacation and your mouth is workin overtime.
You're quotin figures
and droppin names
you're tellin stories
about the dames
you're overlaughin
when things ain't funny
you're tryin to sound like
big money
You know if talk was criminal, you would lead a life of crime
because your mind is on vacation and your mouth is workin overtime.
<piano solo>
You know that life is short
talk is cheap
don't be makin promises that
you can't keep
you don't like this little song I'm singin
just grin and bear it
all i can say is if the
shoe fits wear it
and you must keep talkin
please try to make it rhyme
because your mind is on vacation and your mouth is workin overtime.
Wonderful! This here guy is a national treasure.

Fusion style jazz: THE COMPLETE BITCHES BREW SESSIONS. Its the only jazz collection i need, considering i find the electronic jazz period much more interesting than acoustic.
Miles Davis is the only jazz man you need to collect music of in my opinion, which is pretty unfair to the many other greats, but I have a personal bias, since i find his life to have been be very interesting and tumultuous, everyone should read his autobiography, its hilarious.
Live/Evil by Miles is another great one, actually he has about 20 or more albums that are totally essential and provide amazing variety.
You gotta love most of the work by the WHITE STRIPES, much of RADIOHEAD-OK computer of course-I really like HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY, from KID A, and most of that album, amnesiac is great too
HOWARD TATE'S 'GET IT WHILE YOU CAN' is a really great soul album from the 60's, which many, people are not aware of,
same with JOHNNY OSBOURNE's 'TRUTH'S and RIGHTS'
i love that one, but i lost it, so i'm now trying to buy it again. It is a reggae album probably from the mid 70's. Really good..... just as enjoyable as the very best of Bob Marley's work.
Revolver, magical mystery tour and sgt. pepper's... by you know who... if you don't stop reading now and go kill yourself.
my top Rap Album is GANGSTARR'S "MOMENT OF TRUTH"
has great great insightful lyrics is a very motivational album. The song Moment of Truth will actually motivate you and make you feel better when you're feeling bad. They don't swear alot, DJ premier is in my opinion at his DEFINITE PRIME on this album. With around 20 tracks, at least 15 are totally classic and timeless with some really really amazing beats. This album will definitely grow on you and be a necessity for your collection for all time. Right up there with Aquemini, Atliens, War Reports, Black on Both sides, Reflection Eternal, and other very good Rap albums.
for people who don't listen to much rap, the albums i've mentioned will definitely give you an understanding of the appeal of rap, and show how deep it can be when made by people who have something to say
Jay'z debut REASONABLE DOUBT is one of the all time best albums, and if you're not a jay-z fan you will be after hearing this, unless something is wrong with you. it's amongst the top 5 list of all time best rap albums
What's the story morning glory, although oasis can get tiring, is one of my favorite albums too. It is very consistent.
Bob dylan's first 10 or so albums are completely essential, and favorite for most repeatedly listenable Bob Dylan Album has to be BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. I really like his song IT'S ALRIGHT MA, IM ONLY BLEEDING and all the other acoustic songs on that half of BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME are really good. He is of course the originator of rap with subterranean homesick blues, and is the greatest lyricist to ever be born....in the world.
im mixed black and white, and write a lot of lyrics and freestyle, and i will admit bob dylan had all writers in history beat when in his prime.
Theres lots of other good albums, but i've written enough now, so i'm gonna watch TV now.
Kingkoopa, a most excellent post. And welcome to A2K. I agree about Miles although Kind Of Blue is my definitive album . In it he summed up the history and convolutions of jazz from its inception in the blues to its deconstruction in bebop. And he got wonderful performances out of his players, both black and white
I concur that Ten is one of the all time greatest albums!
Some of my favs include:
Lateralus/Aenima - TOOL
Thirteenth Step/Mer De Noms - A Perfect Circle

Solace - Xavier Rudd
