Big Spenders Account For Nearly Half Of Online Shopping Dollars

By Antone Gonsalves InternetWeek

Web shoppers who buy and spend the most make up less than a fifth of the
online buying population, but account for almost half of the dollars spent,
a research firm said Friday.
As a result, retailers should identify these "most valuable purchasers" and
develop targeted marketing programs to get as much revenue from these
shoppers as possible, Nielsen/NetRatings said.

People who spent more than $185 on the Web and made four or more purchases
from June to August accounted for 18 percent of online buyers in the United
States and 46 percent of total spending, the research firm said. Those who
spent the same amount on three purchases or less accounted for 11 percent
of the buying population and 24 percent of the total.

In comparison, people spending the fewest dollars online and making the
fewest purchases made up the majority of buyers, 55 percent, and accounted
for 21 percent of online purchases.

As a result, retailers need to analyze their customer bases to identify the
big spenders and target them with marketing programs. Besides their value
as revenue contributors, people buying the most online are also
inordinately loyal to the retailers they buy from, Nielsen/NetRatings
analyst Heather Dougherty said.

In addition to loyalty, big spenders are heavy users of online
comparison-shopping tools, tend to fall into higher income brackets and are
more likely to be connected via broadband than the average U.S. Internet
user, Nielsen/NetRatings said. They also spend more time online and on
retail Web sites.

"Customer acquisition strategies need to include a combination of broad
reach marketing tactics, including search and comparison shopping tools, as
well as targeted Web sites that are frequented by the MVPs," Dougherty said
in a statement. "Online retailers also need to tailor loyalty programs that
reward the MVPs for purchasing at their sites to drive repeat sales and
maintain a strong relationship with these valuable customers throughout the
year."

I don't have too many folks to buy for. Mom gets a few things, but I know what she needs/wants - clothes, a new Tempur-pedic pillow. I'll give the nieces & nephews cash plus some cool thing wrapped (funky slippers for the girls, a replacement for a burned down candle in a loved scent for one of the boys, a pop-up kit that the older nephew will love). They're all teenagers now, amazingly. When did that happen? Most of the gifts are purchased, a few more to buy. I actually hate wrapping more than shopping. Gift bags were a miraculous invention as far as I'm concerned.

My sister-in-law told me a story this evening. It's a cautionary tale for those spawn o' satan early shoppers. She purchased a clothing item for me at a sale last February. In May, I joined Weight Watchers and have lost 50+ pounds so far. She had to return it this past weekend. I can't say I was at all sorry to hear her tale of woe. Very Happy Serves her right for doing that early shopping!

Thanks. Weigh-ins are Tuesdays, which is why I'm vague about the number. It was 52.6 last week. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Mac--

Sibling rivalry being what sibling rivalry is, your sister must be feeling just a wee bit Hard Done By. You're entitled to a little Well Done By pomp and circumstance.

I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED YET! Shocked

But it's going to be the internet for out of town folk and a few going-to-the-mall items for my steps. Not alot of people to shop for anymore and I used to miss that but now I give an annual tea for close friends and get nutty with Toys for Tots (plan to get even nuttier this year with so many of Hurricane Katrina's littlest victims right here in Atlanta) and that really puts me in the holiday spirit.

Sweet, the toys -- what a lovely idea. And a tea! Ha, excellent.

Of course it's also charity season. I mean, every season is charity season, but the end of the year tends to be the big time. We've gotten acknowledgments from 2 out of 3 places so far.

I realize that it's not in the true sense of the season but buying toys and imagining all of the little children who have it hard being so excited to get something for Christmas just does it for me.

I had my first tea last year and it must have gone over well because all of last years' guests have rsvp'd for this year. Yay! It took awhile to come up with something to fulfill the lack of holiday todo's in my world. Since moving away from my family years ago and marrying into one that's not so big on celebrating, increasingly I've missed the hustle and bustle, the parties and get-togethers of the holiday season so the tea is a way for me to pull out all of the china and go overboard with the decorating and just enjoy it all again like when my parents were alive and we would all get together and eat and drink and be merry. Plus, since a few of my guests are also business associates, I get to write it all off on my taxes!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

But anyway...back to the shopping!

You guys are a bunch of Christmas wimps!

I still have 8 or 9 people to buy for (about halfway finished), 5 parties to go to, 6 dozen Christmas cards to mail, several craft projects half done, and $150 worth of supplies ordered to make my traditional molded chocolates. (20 dozen go to a single party.) Making the chocolates alone is a 2-day process. But I love doing it...I get to eat my mistakes. Laughing
