Just as long as I remember to stoke the fire I shall be fine. I'm not afraid of it, just not used to the maintenance required for such an operation. I've already been outside and made a few trip to the wood shed to stock up on wood for the night.....lol...to some of you, this whole scenario probably sounds bizarre......heat...wood stove...wood shed....weird......
Thanks for the link sturgis!
We tried to heat the house with wood last winter when the power went out -- went really badly. The house is rather big and very open, no way to really try to seal off the room with the fireplace to warm it up. We found out later that something about how the fire burns was basically sucking all the warm-ish air out of the house. So, while it was putting out some heat, it was also taking in heat, and the living room was somewhat warmish while the rest of the house got absolutely frigid (and made it harder to keep the living room warm).
Anyway, learned a bit about how complicated it all is then.
Good luck!
When the kids were home we would keep a fire going all day on weekends. I agree, you need a cinder ella or two or four to keep it going. But, it's fun. Now, in about 1976 the worse snowstorm ever hit Michigan where we lived, and we had NOthing for 7 days but the fireplace. Even with sheets hanging over all doors to the rest of the house, it was freeeezing. Can't think how much wood would be necessary to heat ANY house all day every day.
Today, new homes have heatolators where pipes fixed behind the grate move some pretty hot air throughout, at least the room it's located. One of our homes (in New England) had vents from a huge fireplace blowing into a stairwell and the kitchen. Wonderful.
So, hopefully, your parents' fireplace has a heatolator?
Lack of heat is definitely not an issue here.....sometimes it's almost unlivable, it's so hot! It's not a fire place though, it's an actual wood stove. They have a fan behind it to circulate the heat some. I actually havn't went through that much wood at all today. It's not too hot, not too cold....a nice temp. Now if my mom were here, we'd have went through 3 times as much wood and no one would be able to breathe.....lol
You think that's funny, pess?
im jealous
I would love to have a home like that.
out in the woods, noone around,

M"Lord,
You might have to import some good old American Shagbark for that endeavor.
Hey! Put some wood on the fire!
My job here is done
shewolf,
It is great to be out in the boonies like this(not to rub it in....lol) although it is kind of creepy at night. I've opted not to watch my usual "most haunted" show tonight! I've also locked all the doors, turned on a lot of lights, and turned the t.v up....even though i'm not watching it....lol....i'm so funny sometimes....
I know the feeling.
Back ground noise is comforting at times.
Espically when you hear absolutly NOTHING when it isnt on.
Kinda makes the skin crawl at times,...
why not watch a good classic movie like Nightmare on Elm street??
have fun. ;-)
did sufp let the fire go out

I have indeed learned my lesson about watching horror flicks alone at night. Now I love horror movies, but I love deep, comfortable sleep better.....hehe
LOL....Cute picture!! (kinda looks like me) Actually I woke up this morning and it was a wee bit chilly......the fire had gone out. (which explains why i'm up sp early) If fact I should go check it again to make sure it actually stayed going.........
Put another log on the fire...
I have always been told that ash is, as Lord Ellpus stated, the best wood for burning. But what do I know? I have a furnace
So supf how much wood have you got lying around? What if you run out?
And BTW how old are you?
Ohh there is lots of wood out here, only thing is I have to haul it in from outside......so at least i'm getting some fresh air and exersize I guess.....
And BTW, i'm 21.
Is there any wooden furniture you think your folks won't miss?
lol Sturgis
I thought you might be my age, sufp, but I guess not....
