Please can someone post me a recipe for Cornbread, in British measurements if possible. The smooth one - that doesn't have niblets in!

I'd be so gratefull

Ingredients:
2 cups White corn meal
1 cup Flour
2 cups Milk
2 tablespoons Shortening
2 tablespoons Baking powder
1 teaspoon Salt
1 Onion, chopped
2 Eggs, beaten
Pepper to taste

Directions:

To make cornmeal bread: Make a batter of the cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, shortening (oil from the baking fowl can be used) and milk.

Bake in a hot oven (400) until done, about half an hour.

but the Cornbread I had didn't have onions in it, it was more like a cake, but not sweet.

How much is in a cup?

Whats shortening (butter?)

Lord L, just bring yourself!

PS I've got Ferrero Roche as well Twisted Evil

8 oz in a cup

leave out the onions and pepper and butter will do fine

Cornbread

1 cup (250 ml) yellow cornmeal
1 cup (250 ml) sifted all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons (20 ml) baking powder
3/4 tsp. (3.75 ml) salt
1 tsp. (5 ml) sugar
1 egg slightly beaten
1 cup (250 ml) milk
2 tablespoons (30 ml) melted shortening or butter

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Sift dry ingredients together. Add egg, milk and shortening/butter. Beat one minute at low speed or 300 vigorous strokes by hand. Bake in a greased 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan for approximately 20-25 minutes.

I did. I tried mckenzie's recipe and got more than I'd bargained for. It wasn't bad, but American mothers would probably weep at my efforts.
Drewdad's right about the honey - very good.
I gave a bit to the fella that delivers my organic veg and d'you know what he said?

He said he'd like to try some in a thick, vegetable gravy... with tatters!
