Is there decent public transportation to this far out, or will I need to rent a car? (The obvious approach, Googling "public transportation from Chicago to Schaumburg", turned up links which informed me that it's possible. But to find out if it also is practical, I'd need to look at system maps, schedules and the like. I didn't find those in Google's links.)
Arlington Heights and Schaumburg are accessible by commuter rail. The place to look for maps, schedules, and information on suburban commuter trains is
Metra.
Once you're in the suburbs, transportation options become rather less convenient.
Pace is the suburban transit agency in charge of bus service. Pace buses stop at both the Schaumburg (Route 602) and Arlington Heights (Routes 690 and 696) Metra stations. The buses are safe and cheap, but they may not get you to where you want to go.
The easiest way to get around the suburbs would be by cab. Unlike in the city, however, you would need to call for a cab to pick you up.
