That would be a shame! I was ready to compare our scars from gallbladder surgery.
Seriously, though, I was hoping to meet you and squinney.

Walter, I'm trying to think of a way to get guests in while you are all here. Soz is planning a December trip and I hope to meet with her while she's here (Soz, maybe we should talk about December on the Chicago thread so as to avoid confusion here). I'm currently planning a trip to Jazz Fest (where ever that may end up being held) over the first weekend in May and will be returning Sunday evening. I wish I could join you on Thursday, but I leave on Wednesday. I'll be happy to bring anyone who is still in town on Monday.
Good idea, J_B.
And to clarify in case there was further confusion, the "scheduling it right" has to do with a December trip I will probably be taking (in a matter of weeks) and wouldn't be available for the May trip. Evidently all museums in Chicago need to provide 52 free days a year. The idea is that it is one free day per week, year-round. What they are actually doing, though, is clumping them in the off-season. So there are 2 free days a week (Monday and Tuesday, for most of them) about September through March. But no free days in May.
Really? I think the Art Institute has free Tuesday year-round, but I'm not familiar with the other museum policies on free days.
True, "NO free days in May" is probably an overstatement. I was investigating Shedd, Field, and Brookfield Zoo specifically, and Shedd and Field share free days with most other museums -- but I didn't look into the Art Institute.
Additionally there are a few free days sprinkled throughout the calendar -- Field Museum has one on Sue's "birthday", (in June I believe), etc.
Ooh, thanks wandeljw, I forget that people the world over might not all be on a first-name basis with her. (She's soooo cool...)
Meanwhile, sublime PMed me a link to a pic of what's available at his condo, wowee!! It's definitely NOT the cement-block and bad-lighting basement room I was envisioning. Quite nice. (The pic is flash and I can't figure out how to grab it without broadcasting to the world where sublime lives, which I understand he might be reluctant to do. That would be another element in deciding whether it would be OK as a meeting place -- it's sublime's HOME, after all.)
So we still need a few more details, but could be a very attractive plan B.
I could see it as plan A if the room could handle it is we had, say, 38 people..
Yeah. It looks like it could. Awaiting more info from sublime, though (who is a sweetheart for offering!! Thanks!)
If it does look good, and if it doesn't cost money for him to secure it, I'd see something like going ahead and securing it while we keep an eye out for something that might be better, but not for TOO long.
Some of the other things I'm curious about are how many people it holds, whether it allows catering, whether we'd want to have catering or just like meet there and hang out, coolers of drinks or something, or bring take-out individually, who knows, how long we could stay there, etc., etc.
I will find out more info, how many people are allowed or recommended. Not sure about the catering but I know that I can have some of the best pizza in Chicago delivered there. (Pete's Pizza for the members in the vicinity)
I think they will hold a check as a deposit and I would be able to cancel if necessary.
Here's the pic of the recroom sublime1 is talking about - he says there's lots more space to the right of the piano. Looks downright comfy to me, what can be seen of it. Nice pooltable; I could be entertained there a good while
Cool, thanks for taking care of that, timber!
I had a problem when I was trying to grab some flash stuff off of the Disney site, too -- maybe you can start a new thread on how to do that? (With a mac...)
They
will let US
in There?
Seems like it would work. Might depend on if they have an upper limit re folks, re fire rules, etc.
I'm attracted to the idea of, er, pizza, thai takeout, whatever, and not having to be out in two hours flat. Some people will be late, it is the nature of the thing, and tough re any restaurant room.
And money? We could all just haggle re who owed what for pepperoni in the corner..
Also if it is cool with the Board, or whatever, for Sublime to have such guests. As someone who has met a lot of a2kers, we are an amazingly lovely group, convivial and civilized and unlimitedly interesting, but they don't know that.
My favorite painting at Chicago's Art Institute (Caillebotte's "Paris Street, Rainy Day")
This painting is huge. I have sat in front of it many times and found myself transported into the scene.
That's one of my favorites too, Wandel. I can't pick a single favorite, there are so many. I have a standard tour of the AI I give myself every so often. I take the train into the city, walk down to Michigan Avenue, spend a few hours touring the Art Institute, grab lunch as Cosi or the Thai place on the next block north, wander through Millenium Park, head back toward Union Station - stopping at Garrett's Popcorn on the way, and then return home on the train. It's usually an inpromptu day, when my schedule and the weather call me out, but it's my special treat to myself when I get the chance.
wande, One of my favorite paintings at the Natinal Gallery in London is in the same theme of umbrellas by Renoir.
I was disappointed on my last visit to London in April, because the painting was "missing."
Put me down for it! I'm tentatively planning to come. Spoke to hubby about it last night. He thought it sounded like fun, but he and son will stay here since son will still be in school (homework, etc.)
Other than flying through O'Hare many times, I've never set foot in Chicago. You guys will have to recommend a place to stay and give me directions to our meeting spot. I could stay for a couple of days or so if there will be others around.
