I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet (I was just looking at the pictures): In this post pn pg.208, c.i., those buildings in the first two pictures are on the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIC) campus, not the University of Chicago (U of C) campus. Well, I'm not so sure about the first picture, but about the second I am positive; the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT station is quite famous. Anyway, thanks for the pictures! I live here and I don't really see the city anymore the way your camera lens does, so it's nice to get that perspective again.

Yes, Smog's right on that. The first buillding, by Mies van der Rohe, was part of the architecture school; the second, the student union, was done by Rem Koolhaas, and is very nifty inside as well as outside. With any luck I'll have some good photos of those..

Nah, anonymity, work, and other things won out in the end. Plus, without a car, getting to sublime's place would have been quite a trek for me. (I know, I know, people came from Europe to be there, etc.... Still, I only had about 3 hours free that day, and the trip would've been over an hour each way.)

i know people are curious about Mrs. yitwail's reaaction to the gathering, as the only non-member present. i can tell you she enjoyed your company, but i believe you'll be hearing about it through her own words in a day or two. Smile

Thanks for letting us know, yitwail. I was hoping that we did not make her nervous.

So smog-

We can take it that if you had had nothing to do and were bored stiff and at a loose end and the gig was only a short stroll you would more likely have graced the gathering with your presence.

Oh, goodie!!!

She seemed very sweet to me. I don't know that I would have been able to stand our group if I walked in on it cold like she did. We all acted like a bunch of long-lost friends. It could've been very intimidating to an outsider. Of course, she isn't an outsider NOW! I look forward to seeing her here on A2K!

Eva: sure, it's an adjustment for any newcomer. if you don't know what a PM is, for instance, it might be hard to understand a discussion about PM. Rolling Eyes i'm been at a2k over a year, and i'm still learning things. it may actually make it easier for her to go online, having first met some of you offline, but my guess is she probably won't become as involved with a2k as i am.

Yeah, I guess that's one way to say it. But don't worry, spendy, I woulda used public transportation. In fact, that's all I use (other than walking).

You see what you get with the hometown boys. Honesty. Grace and Humility. How refreshing.

I mean, I guess I'm kinda honest, but I'm definitely not graceful, and I'm more withdrawn (shy?) than modest. Still, thanks.

Anyway, that's enough about me. (Seriously.) More pictures, stories, interesting comments from people who actually attended, etc. I'll flip my switch back into observer mode now.

Stay that way smog. It's more graceful than you think.

But I have enjoyed this thread I must admit. The pictures are very interesting. Doesn't it look separated from the earth though. It's science fiction come true. World cities.

I bet there's some better stories than they've been telling though.

Walter and I just returned home from our minor tour of the American South_west. We consumed 77 gallons of petrol.

spendius, i wouldn't call this a story, but what amazed me the most about chicago--besides meeting the a2k folk, of course--were the tulips. tulips of every hue were everywhere, but it was time to leave before i managed to take a single photo. Sad i'll have to look over all the photos posted to see if i can spot a few.

).We had - even with with dys/Walter being in the mobile home.

Thanks for those great photos and stories (Mrs. Walter told me already by phone about it).

I've done some as well (from Chicago, the meeting, New Mexico and Colorado and a tiny bit of Utah and Arizona in the background of some as well]).
Will post a few them (made 420 so far) from coming Wednesday onwards.

I must admit that these few days here in the States have been excellent - mostly due to the effords of A2K'ers (and a picturesque and lovely city, wonderful South-West landscape and people ... ).

Maybe they (the tulips) came from South Holland. South Holland was originally a truck garden area for Chicago, and yes, it was first settled by the Dutch. Edna Ferber's novel, So Big, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize, was set in South Holland (i believe, don't quote me).
