Nilo Cruz is a 42-year-old Cuban-born New Yorker, and his play Anna in the Tropics just won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

"...in a rather large surprise in the theater world "Anna in the Tropics" won the Pulitzer Prize, chosen over more celebrated works by far more celebrated playwrights. The other finalists were "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" by Edward Albee and Richard Greenberg's "Take Me Out." "

"Unlike the other finalists, which appeared on Broadway (where "Take Me Out" is still running), the winning play had not been seen by any of the five Pulitzer drama jurors, nor by members of the Pulitzer board who made the award. "Anna" won on the strength of its script alone."

Don't buy your plane tickets yet, Lightwizard (much as we'd love to see you here in New York): the play hasn't been produced in New York yet, and so far there's been no announcement of a New York production (although there's a reading scheduled for next weekend at the Public Theater, which may be a sign of things to come), but it is going to be done at several regional theatres -- including the South Coast Rep in Costa Mesa -- next season.
