I'll tell you what....Gabriel's Ladder. Now THAT was scary...

At least that one part where he was in the hospital, getting wheeled down a hallway, and as he went, things just got wierder, and worse, and erie, and terrible.

Anyone see that?

I saw a film called Jacob's Ladder, set in Vietnam, starring Tim Robbins, that is a very disturbing film...

Whoops. That's for the correction, yes it Was Jacobs Ladder Embarrassed

Really Bella - You're going to find it so disappointing as far as being scary. Still worth watching though

Take it from me, I was a Roman Catholic schoolgirl when it first came out, believing you could be possessed by the devil just by thinking about him. I was petrified to even listen to the theme from the movie on the radio.

When I finally got around to watching it recently, it was so tame compared even to network TV today.

If you like, I'll come over and hold your hand.

I think the only film of all those on that list that I've watched all the way through was Rosemary's Baby.... Smile

Chai -- we knew a young man who was so affected by his RC-demonic possession fears that he was afraid to go to sleep and had, like the kid in The Sixth Sense... a virtual altar of icons hanging above his bed. What the mind won't do to you, your priest might.

Oh Lord, I totally relate...I spent many a sleepless night.
I read the book when it came out in 1971, bad move, I was only 12. Really, the book is MAJOR scary, and should not be read by children. Seriously.

A little while after that, I was at Mass, and old Father Rooney was giving one of his famous Fire & Brimstones. I was sitting there thinking about hell and the devil, and all of a sudden felt really horrible. I honestly thought I was being possessed. In reality, it was the flu that hit me all of a sudden, you know how you can feel fine, and then 20 minutes later you know you're gonna be really sick.

I was convinced for the next year I had the devil inside me. Wore one of the Virgin Mary medals because I heard if you wore it and said the prayer on it every day, you couldn't go to hell. I said the prayer about 1,000 times a day. Never told a soul about my fears either.

Wow, haven't thought about that in years.

Flu -- possession... hmmm... reminds me of Love in the Time of Cholera. Wink

We humans have an almost infinite capacity to freak ourselves out, one way or another, sometimes on purpose.

I disagree with this list. It should be called the 50 best scary movies, because most of them are very good (suspense, story line, effects) but they are not particularly scary.

When I went to see The Exorcist, I took a seat close to the exit so as to escape in case it got too scary (I had totally bought in to the hype) So you can imagine how let down I felt when much of the film was mildly amusing. The only scary part was a scene where the mother goes to check out rustling noises in the attic (i.e. our own imagination can scare us much better than anything the SFX people can conjure up).

I am not scared easily really, in fact the idea that I might not be able to get an image out of my head is scarier than the actual image usually.

I watch real life murder mysterys all the time, have read and know about so many actual serial killings that I can't believe I'd be scared of a movie, considering what many people have actually done to others is far worse than hollywood can think up. But I just have a weird feeling when I think about this movie. Something keeps holding me back....

Which brings me to Halloween creep out number one: I always sleep with a fan on. In the winter, it's turned to the wall as to avoid the cold blast over my bed. I had it off the oscillation mode and turned to the entertainment center. When I was getting ready for bed that night, I turned the fan on and noticed it was facing the wall. Sort of weird. Dismissed it as me forgetting I turned it that way. But then, it started oscillating. The on/off buttons are on the stand. The oscillating button is on the top. I didn't hit it. My husband got home after me and hadn't been upstairs until that moment with me. So he didn't do it. Who else lives with us? No one living....

My friend (refer to paranormal happenings thread) made an appearance last night.

"Passion of the Christ" was a snuff movie and bloodier than any "Friday the 13th." The comupance -- it didn't help the Romans to become a Christian, the "empire" folded non-the-less. Maybe the Dark Ages were Christ's revenge after all.

"The Exorcist" is scary because it is presented as entirely credible. With CSI, et al, we have become desensitized to the gore but the basic premise of the film, that one can be demonically possessed, is still powerful.

No, not CSI. I am talking A&E, History, Biography... stories on actual murderers. Dalhmer, Manson, Gasy, Bundy...the real freaks. The guys who look like normal people but are out there living next door to us.

Bella,

Have to agree with you here. I lived in Wichita during the BTK murders. It was paralyzing for the whole town. Once his identify came out I thanked God I had never even heard of the man!

But, for me the scariest movie I ever saw was Halloween. I saw it in the middle of the afternoon and was so freaked! Even the light of day couldn't shake the feeling for awhile.
