Tell Me How To Remove a Stubborn Program?

I had started to download a shooter game, when I realized the size of the program was bigger than I wanted to try to tackle. So, only a couple of seconds into the download, I clicked on the 'cancel' button in the download window. Since then, not only has the icon and the program been stuck on my computer, but when my computer is first turned on, there is a window open, asking if I want to run the program. I have tried to delete it in every way I know. I have gone to 'add/remove programs' in the control panel, I have tried to find it in the program folder and delete it, etc. But there is an error window that comes up and says "Other applications are running that are using components of the program", or something to that effect. And I don't have anything running when that window comes up. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this program?

Try booting into SAFE MODEI/i] and then deleting.

You could also go into the task manager by hitting ctrl alt del once and choosing applications and close the offending program from there and then try deleting it.

Snood: Try regedit,if you're comfortable in your computer's registry. You might find the offender and delete it. If not that, try Adaware,or try Spybot,Search and Destroy. Both should find the offender and allow you to delete it.

Snood,
If you DO try the registry route. Be sure to backup the registry before making any changes. Unless you are expert in this, I would urge you not to try this since you wouldn't necessarily know what you are looking for.

snood, if your running XP typr msconfig in the run option from the start menu, this will open a window that allows you to select which programs to run at start time, there are six tabs on the window that opens you need to go to the last one 'Startup' scroll throught the list of programs and click on the one that is causing the offence (uncheck it), you will need to restart your computer after this, when the machine has restarted you'll be presented with a window that states that the system config has been changed, there is a check box on this which you might want to select to stop this window from appearing everytime you start the machine, now with the program disabled at startup you should be able to remove it in the normal fashion

Download and install CCleaner. While there, take the "Tour", and read through the FAQ. When it has installed and you have read through the important stuff on the webpage, open the program if its not already open, click "Check for updates now ..." down at the bottom right-hand side of the page. When it has completed its update process (it may or may not find updates), close the program, then close all browser windows, disconnect from the internet, re-launch CCleaner, and select "Tools" (the orange-ish gear icon in the left panel).

Select the "Startup" tab, and look in the right hand panel for entries recognizeable as the application giving you trouble. Highlight it, then click the "Delete Entry" button down at the bottom left of the page.

Now, select the "Uninstall" tab, and look in the righthand panel for the app that you want rid of. Highlight it, then click the "Run Uninstaller" button at the top righthand side of the page, and confirm .

When that has completed, select "Issues" (the blue stacked blocks icon), and make sure everything in the "Issue Scanning Settings" is selected, then click the "Scan for Issues" button. This could take a while. When it completes, check through the list in the righthand panel to make sure there's nothing there you want to keep, otherwise make sure everything else found is selcted. Click "Fix selected issues ... " down at the bottom right of the page. Confirm, and when prompted to create a backup, do so, and note where the backup will be saved. Another "Fix all issues?" box then will pop up, select "Fix all issues", and confirm.

When that has completed, select "Cleaner (the whiskbroom icon at the top). In the "Windows" tab, make sure everything is selected, then click the "Analyze" button down at the bottom left of that page. Be patient, this will take a while. When that has completed, click the "Run Cleaner" button down at the bottom righthand side of the page, and confirm.

When that has completed, reboot into safe mode, relaunch CCleaner, select "Issues", and run another scan and clean as above. Following that, select "Cleaner" and repeat that process as above.

Now, reboot normally, and connect to the internet (if you want to). The problem program should be totally gone. Your cookies, temp files, and caches will be emptied as well; your machine likely will seem faster and more responsive, though you'll hafta manually log on to any sites you had set up for autmatic log-on - a minor hassle, and worth the effort for the overall benefit.
