I am testing out a macro lense that I have "on loan" from my local camera store. I admit these photos aren't all that exciting, but it is really cool to see this "other world" up close and personal.

I like them. If you still have that lense on loan, TAKE MORE.

Try taking one of a match just as it is being lit.

Like this??

I took about 20 photos, and this is the closest to "ignition" that I got.

With a little more practice, I think I could get the match at the point the head has ignited, but just before it erupts into flame. I also was holding the match in my hand, over a candle. I suspect if I fix the match to some sort of mount, I could get the match itself in much better focus.

Thanks for the great idea!

That mounting idea is great!

Have you tried having someone else light the match?

Also, does that camera have a setting where multiple shots can be taken one after another very quickly, that can increase your odds of getting the shot you desire.

Well here is what I did. I laid the match on the top of a vase - the match is one of those long fireplace matches, so this worked just fine. I placed a black fleece jacket of mine behind it, so that there would be absolutely nothing reflective in the background. I then placed a light source so that it shone on the match, in an effort to help illuminate the match stick itself.

I was then able to light the match using a lighter, yet the match itself remained still. That's why the photo below is in much better focus.

I do have a remote that I could use to increase the odds of getting a "hit" at the right time, but I think the shot below turned out well enough - at least for me Smile

Yes that shot is great, the extra light source seems to have helped a lot.

You should try strking the match on a matchbox, the sparks created are amazing, I'll try and find a pic that I'm thinking of.

Well, I'm trying to think how I would get an in focus picture of a moving match (striking on the box) without a very short shutter speed. That means a lot of light, which would mean you would hardly see the sparks, I am thinking.

Any ideas?

Try not moving the match, but the matchbox.

I thought of that just about the time I hit the "Submit" button Smile

I am out of town at present, but might give this a go when I get home in a few days. Thanks again for a great idea!

And BTW, I have decided to keep the macro lense Wink
