I don't know whether anyone can answer trivia questions regarding a show that appeared on NBC-TV and ABC-TV during the 1950s, but if you can, I would very much appreciate it.

I'm trying to satisfy my curosity by recalling the name of the on-air announcer for TV's "The Voice of Firestone," which appeared on TV in its early days (first on NBC and then it transferred to ABC) --during the 1950s. Formerly, TVOF had been a radio program (dating back to 1928) -- it made its transition to TV in 1949, according to the information I've read about the show. The show suffered from low viewership and it was forced off the air, I believe, in the early 1960s. It featured high-class renditions of musical numbers -- contemporary opera stars (Rise Stevens, Eleanor Steber, Jerome Hines, etc) were guests on the show, and the program showcased its in-house orchestra, led by conductor Howard Barlow.

What is not included in most reference works (both at the library and on the Internet) -- the fact I'm trying to uncover -- is the name of the announcer. He probably would have served in that capacity until 1958 (or 1957?) when, according to the research I've seen, John Daly was the show's narrator (apparently, only for one year.). The man whose name I'm trying to recall was not Daly -- I distinctly remember Daly as a TV celebrity (What's My Line) and other shows.

I don't know whether the guy whose name I'm trying to recall was the announcer only when the show appeared on ABC (or on NBC) -- or on both networks.

The announcer whose name I'm trying to recall, introduced the show, announced each musical number, and then did the show closing announcement. He often appeared on-camera during these bits. I can picture him but can't remember his name.

I've already tried the Internet Movie Database (which also includes a lot of information about radio and TV in addition to being a great source about motion pictures) but someone who responded to my inquiry suggested the guy whose name I'm looking may have been Hugh James, but I don't think James is the one. A photo provided by the Firestone TIre & Rubber Co's PR Dept shows James, together with Harvey Firestone Sr and Jr, but the picture dates back to 1928 -- and I don't think the guy I'm looking for would have been that old when I saw him on the show in the 1950s. James also was Lowell Thomas's announcer and he's included in the famous segment -- which is usually found on famous radio blooper collections -- during which Thomas -- as he's reading a news item that suddenly strikes him as very funny -- cracks up and laughs uncontrollably for several minutes.

UPDATE: I took out a videotape from my local library just this morning (10-1-05) that featured Metropolitan Opera star Roberta Peters appearing on several Voice of Firestone shows (in 1952 and '54), and on the tape you hear the voice of the announcer -- and you see him at the end of the tape. Unfortunately, he does not identify himself, and the tape does not include the credits for the show, which, when the shows originally ran might have included his name.

Any help would be appreciated -- e-mail me at [email protected]

Thank you.
