It's always 1 to 6,
it's always 15 to 20,
it's always 5,
but it's never 21,
unless it's flying.

URS Corp., a San Francisco planning and engineering firm partially owned by California Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband, landed an Army contract Monday worth up to $600 million.

The award to help with troop mobilization, weapons systems training and anti-terrorism efforts is the latest in a string of plum defense jobs snared by URS. In February, the firm won an army engineering and logistics contract that could bring in $3.1 billion during the next eight years.

Francis, how did you know. I thought you were on holiday., are you in S.F.?

No 10.5 is not the correct Answer.

GONGS

Let G be the duration of a single gong.
Let D be the duration of the delay between gongs.

7G + 6D = 7
10G + 9D = ?

Carditel assumed G = 0.

Another reasonable assumption is that D = 0.
In that case, it takes 10 seconds.

If neither assumption can be made, there are an infinite number of solutions.

No the dice is not BIG One, but the regular...
Its faces has 1 to 6 numbers.

When no flying 5 faces are visible and the sum of the faces lie bet'n 15 to 20.

When its flying the total sum is 21.

No its not Mig-21. Cool

Stop the clock - we have a winner! Cool

An explanation:
"It's always 1 to 6": the numbers on the faces of the dice,
"it's always 15 to 20": the sum of the exposed faces when the dice comes to rest after being thrown,
"it's always 5": the number of exposed faces when the dice is at rest,
"but it's never 21": the sum of the exposed faces is never 21 when the dice is at rest,
"unless it's flying": the sum of all exposed faces when the dice is flying is 21 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6).

A big cheque is in the post.

I sort of agree with "markr" but if D=0 are you not left with single gong of 10 seconds duration?

The magnitude could rise and fall within the duration of a single gong.

I'd go with 10.5.

Dr. Jack, at the north-pole, made a wonderful discovery. To avoid his discovery being leaked out and cause a great panic, Dr. Jack said to his assistant, "_Listen_ Joe, make sure you send the crucial part of the message to the mainland in code!"

The message: We found 14221993142020.

Since the mainland office couldn't make heads nor tail from it, they asked Joe to send the message again, but this time filling in the gaps.

So Joe sent: "We found 1 42219 93 142020."

What had they found on the north pole?

Aha, you found the source. Why do you doubt it can be solved?

Whim, the guy is a genius. This is no a=1 substitution.
It may be, "couldn't make heads nor tail from it" is part of a clue.

However, I have only been able to complete half his problems, and this one will not be in that half. Crying or Very sad

u guys figure this out?

"I'm a short story, a poem or song,
I can be big or tiny, short and long.
Some people know, me other ones don't.
Some people'll try me and others won't.
What am I, such a simple little thing,
now guess me quickly or else I'll sing (trust me, you don't want me to sing!)

No, the solution lies in the fact that there are 6 intervals bet'n the 7 gongs,
thus, we have 1 interval of 7/6 seconds,
thus when clock strikes 10, the time taken would be
10*7/6 = 70/6 = 11 2/3 seconds;
