Hi. In a year or so we are moving from Chicago to Phoenix. We have a whole houseload of stuff. I would really appreciate finding out what moving companies base their fees on before I begin calling for quotes. I read below that selling everything and starting over is sometimes best. Is this really true? I could probably part with everything but a grandfather clock, master bedroom set and some office furniture. Kids rooms, dining room, family room and kitchen stuff can all get sold or tossed for all I care. Is it the SIZE of the van that is important i.e. should I try to cram less stuff on a smaller moving van or is it something else like gas, mileage, # days etc. Thanks so much for any advice.
Becky
Moving companies generally use formula which takes into account the amount of stuff to be moved (either estimated weight or cubic feet of storage space) times the distance. What I've done in the past is get estimates from three different movers, then compare those to what it would cost to buy all new stuff at the destination. Usually (not always, but usually) you come out ahead by keeping the old, familiar furnishings and giving the contract to the mover you think you trust best (not necessarily the lowest bidder).
