I work for a staffing agency that can help healthcare workers who are displaced by Katrina.
CEO-dude told me to look into this, and try to market job opportunities to them.
Anywho, in order to do so I need to know the main hotspots where they have been going.
If anyone here can help me put together a comprehensive list of locations it would give me a head start on this project.
About 2,000 refugees are in Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Another 200 - 250 or so are in Amityville, NY (Suffolk County, it's on the Southeastern part of Long Island). Plus several thousand in Houston although they're all being packed up and moved elsewhere.
I don't know how many of these people are healthcare workers, though, but if the regular numbers are any indication, I'd say that most of your target audience are in Texas.
Northern Louisiana seems to be big, too.
I've been looking but so far only got impressions, no stats.
Houston and Austin Texas have lots of evacuees left.
I would contact the Red Cross in those areas - they might be able to put you in touch with who you're looking for.
I was in Texas for the last couple of weeks and had the opportunity to work with the Red Cross at the shelter for several days -- amazing. The shelter had large areas for job placement -- I think those efforts were being handled by the various cities and not the Red Cross though.
Hey back at'cha, soz!
I finally have a computer again!
Yippee!!
Looking forward to stories from your trip.
When I was looking for stats I came across the fact that Houston has "the highest concentration" of Katrina refugees, but a) I wasn't sure if was the highest concentration in Texas or in the US, and b) the refugees are presumably themselves being evacuated due to Rita.
are you home yet?

Thanks y'all! Some of the peeps in my department are working on this and were stumped on locations so this will really help.
here, the convention center is being reorganized.
Due to Austin City Limits, there are NO hotel rooms available for the people in south texas.
How much can they reorganize 20,000 people??!!
Yep. Got back last night. I had a great trip.
I got to meet shewolf, the mayor of Austin and the actor Matthew McConehy (however you spell it). Cool!
My sis is on the board of the Red Cross is Austin. As I understand it the convention center shelter will be closed down by this weekend and new shelters are opening in Austin as we speak. Austin is expecting a major influx of people from Houston/Corpus, etc.
I talked to sis this morning -- there are 12 new shelters now open in Austin (the convention center shelter closes today) and the National Red Cross has sent 800 volunteers to staff them. It sounds like Austin will be the epicenter of evacuation.
The Red Cross and the Salvation Army might have lists of health care people.
