I recently lost a teacher who was more than just a teacher to many people. She was one of those people you just don't forget. She was more than a teacher. I wanted to write something to send to her husband but I want it to be just perfect. I wanted to send something that expressed the way I felt about this woman but not be too sad. Please let me know if there are any suggestions to make this poem better. I am looking for better ways to say what I've already said. Thanks so much.

A Great Woman:
In Memory of L.R

She walked with us for too brief a moment,
time now lightly laced with her laughter and smiles,
her wisdom and courage.
She inspired us, made us laugh and taught us,
more about living life than what was in a textbook.

Life was changed forever the day that I met her.

How often her laughter filled a room,
making it impossible not to smile.
How often her passion for life spilled over,
contagious to those of us who
were just learning what it was all about.
She spoke with gusto and spent each day
reminding us through her actions
that we shouldn't take life too seriously,
and that what was important wasn't between
the pages of our books or on the stage.

A teacher.
Not just of English or Drama,
but of Life, of living, of being, of making the most out of every day,
of enjoying each moment with fervor and feeling.
She taught us that growing up doesn't mean growing old.
She taught us that life is a journey, meant to be enjoyed and explored.
And she taught those things through example.

Our world is a better place because this great woman has walked it.
And we are all better people, having been here when she did.

That is a really, really nice tribute, Bella.

On a very small point, I think you made a couple of typos?

"reminding us though her actions "....needs an "r" in through

"And she taught those things thought example." ....is "thought" supposed to be "through"?

She sounds like she was a wonderful person. I'm sorry to hear that you've lost her.

Thanks Lord. Yeah, I noticed the typos. Thanks though...I always like a second eye when doing things this important. Sometimes, you read it the way you see it, rather than the way it actually is.

A person like this is very rare, and I also count myself lucky to have had a very similar influence during my formative years. I called her my second Mum, as mine left home when I was fifteen, and she sort of took on the role (she was actually my best friend's Mum).

At her funeral, about five years ago, she had arranged for two songs to be played, one at the beginning and one at the end.

Her favourite group was the Beatles, although she was from an older generation, and she started things off with "Imagine", by John Lennon.

At the end, a speech she had prepared was read out, and basically stated that she wanted no grieving when we left the Church. She wanted everyone "who wasn't driving" (typical of her...) to get, in her own words, a bit squiffy during the afternoon, and tell funny stories about her.
The final song was "she loves you" ....and I've never seen so many grown men cry.

She was an avid gardener, and I have at least ten of her plants in my garden. They receive extra special attention, because that is what she gave to me, and so many others.

Sorry to waffle, but reading your tribute bought it all back.

Nice job.

Don't be sorry.....it's times like this that make us remember we are all the same inside. It's one of those very human moments.
