Stray Cat wrote:I think David Lean composed some of the best movie "theme music" of all time.
The two best examples, IMO, are "Laura's Theme" a.k.a. "Somewhere My Love" from Dr. Zhivago, as well as the beautiful, haunting music in Ryan's Daughter.
And how about the music from "The Godfather" -- which I believe was composed by Coppola...?
The score for The Godfather was composed by Nino Rota Stray Cat
The music for "The Godfather" was by Nino Rota who also composed one of my favorite film scores, the music for Fellini's "La Strada" which was actually adpated as a ballet. Rota's score for "Death on the Nile" has some soaring romantic themes worthy of Tchaikovsky. The opening theme music is truly captivating.
for "themes," music that provokes and evokes the imagry of the films?
star wars
Bridge on the river kwai
Fellowship of the Ring.. shore's score is my very favorite.. (and lightwizard, you were right, his second score for the trilogy, Two Towers grows on you with time)
opening music of west side story......okay, okay jerome robbins fantastic choreography with the music makes it all work, but they are so intertwined that I can not imagine one without the other....and how can you go wrong with berstein (and sondheim)?
with words?
New York, New York from On the Town
Bye Bye Birdie
then there is......
An American in Paris (perhaps that's cheating a bit, but still, like gene kelly's other entry above, you can't think of the movie without the music in your ears, but then again, how could you not?)
dont know the names but I like the theme music to
Once were Warriors
Lord of the Rings
Braveheart
Oh, how could I forget, a very high listing, please, for the Spanish song: Porque te vas? in the the film Cría Cuervos (Saura, 1976). Impossible to forget the amazing eyes of Ana Torrent while she dreams away on this melody.
Morricone's score for The Mission was great.
But in terms of impact, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, in Platoon; the counterpoint between image and music was superb.
eoe-That Mission Impossible tune, was it the revamped version by Limp Biskit?
I loved it, bought it and played it loud!!
The revamped music to Lost in Space was pretty cool too.
The song played in Mighty Joe Young mentioned earlier was Stephen Foster's Beautiful Dreamer. That song must have been used more than any other in films. I've even heard it in a number of old westerns.
A lot of songs from musicals jumped into my head.
Carousel You'll never walk alone
Oklahoma People will say we're in love
South Pacific Some enchanted evening
Gigi Gigi
West side story Tonight tonight

Lalo Schifrin. He did the original theme for the tv show. He also composed the theme to "The Man From Uncle" and countless movies including "Cool Hand Luke".
Schifrin is one of the most talented of soundtrack music and his work in bossa nova genre is legendary.
Quote:The music for "The Godfather" was by Nino Rota
Someone mentioned upthread that Carmine Coppola wrote the music. Actually, I think Francis Ford's father
did do some of the music -- some of the little tarantellas -- like in the wedding sequence at the beginning of Godfather.
Carmine Coppola only wrote some additional music for the mall wedding scene. Nino Rota was the principal composer.
Jerome Kern's Musical film version of Show Boat, featured Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" (lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein 2nd.)
Robeson later changed the lyrics, making them more political, but that piece of original film is still in my head and I can recall it at any time.
What an amazing voice.
Dere's an ol' man called de Mississippi;
Dat's de ol' man dat I'd like to be!
What does he care if de world's got troubles?
What does he care if de land ain't free?
Ol' Man River,
Dat Ol' Man River
He mus' know sumpin' But don't say nuthin',
He jes' keeps rollin',
He keeps on rollin' along.
He don't plant taters,
He don't plant cotton,
An' dem dat plants 'em
Is soon forgotten,
But Ol' Man River,
He jes' keeps rollin' along
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin' an' racked wid pain -
Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk,
An' you land in jail...
Ah gits weary
An' sick of tryin';
Ah'm tired of livin'
An skeered of dyin',
But Ol' Man River,
He jes' keeps rollin' along

I think Hans Zimmer's musical composition for Gladiator is also memorable
(I've only watched the film twice - but I've listened to the music from it hundreds of times)
John William's score for JAWS
The old classics used in 2001 - Platoon - Gallipoli - The Pianist
Donnie Darko's theme song 'Mad World' (original lyrics by Tear for Fears re-vamped by Gary Jules) - a favorite film of mine.
Oh yeah, music-lover - I meant to say, great thread.
Paul Robeson also sang some great songs in "Song of Freedom", a great film.

I don't know that film, but will look out for it. Nice one, goodfielder.
How about the 'something of constant sorrow' from taht George Cloony film about the 3 prisoners set in the 40's...just remebered..Oh Brother where art thou?
Also the Bond violin music from the film where they go down into a Volcano in Japan.
The James Whale, also the director of "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein," version of "Show Boat" is still the better version although I do enjoy Howard Keel's singing performances and the Gower Champion choreography in the later MGM color version. Too bad it's not wide screen and stereo.
"The Entertainer" theme by Scot Joplin that revived his ragtime music in the film the Sting.
