In early October, the US imposed new sanctions on the ICC after former judge Navi Pillay was announced as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The US government intends to freeze the Court’s assets in the US in order to restrict its ability to act.
Far-reaching sanctions are already in place against the Court’s President, Tomoko Akane, many judges and prosecutors.
Now, the European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its representatives. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the decision, which recognises the Court’s commitment to international law.
