I was wondering if anyone knew of the best way to frame an oil pastel painting without having it done professionally. The painting i did is pretty big -about poster size... I was just wondering if just using a regular mat and frame would be enough protection or should/do i need to do anything else?
thanks for your help!!
Hi,
Yes, mat, and frame is just fine.
You can also protect it by spraying the painting with Tufflim Fixative (I use Grumbacher), but, you can use a different brand. The one I use is for charcoal, pastel, and pencil. You are talking about pastel crayons right?
You can also get a pad (depending on size) or a (large) sheet of Clear Acetate .005 (5 mil). Cut it to size, and that will be like your protective glass too when you frame it.
Maybe someone else may have a different way of doing it that is cheap too.

thanks for the great help. It is my first painting using them so i just wanted to try and preserve it. yeah, if anyone else has different suggestions please reply. -Adam
Adam,
You don't have to use both the Fixative, and the Acetate. You can use one or the other. I like to use both for better protection.
I use color pencils myself.
Oil pastel on paper right? Backings could be heavy mat board, foamcore or masonite (most ridgid) Then glass on the front. Oil pastels offer the most vibrant colors for sure.
