We don't just have her to thank for understanding just how sophisticated chimpanzees are. We also, I feel, have her to thank for an overall shift in human thought about animals. In the six decades she's been internationally known, there's been a profound change in how us human types see the animals around us.
We feel our pets understand us. Not just obey us and love us, but actually 'get' us. We forgive the strays and feral critters and wildlife in our lives when they inconvenience us or damage things because we know they, too, are just trying to get through another day, as best they can.
And we recognize and know that we are the caretakers of this world, and not just for our own species.
I leave you with a Gary Larson cartoon that didn't offend her. Oh no, far from it. She apparently found it funny.
