Do cats get jealous if their owner plays with another pet?

You are sitting on the sofa, petting a small dog you just brought home. Your cat is sitting on the table, staring down with wide, round eyes. At first, it just watches quietly. But after a few minutes, the cat jumps down, squeezes into your lap, and uses its paw to touch your hand as if trying to “push” the dog away. If you keep petting the dog, the cat may start meowing louder than usual, even flicking its tail strongly to grab your attention.
